    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use information related with a discontinuous transmission state by detecting a defective frame when a window error is beyond a defective frame threshold, and changing the defective frame threshold based on whether a receiver is in a continuous transmission mode or a discontinuous transmission mode. SOLUTION: A defective frame threshold is set in a defective frame detector 318 (shown by a figure with a graph in the detector 318). The threshold is varied according to the judgment of whether or not a transceiver is in a discontinuous transmission (DTX) mode. In the case of the discontinuous transmission state, the rate of the defective frame to be reported as a satisfactory frame to be transmitted to a voice decoder can be reduced. A defective frame index is generated in the diagonal line part of the graph in the detector 318. A lenient threshold in the non-discontinuous transmission mode is set so as to be 37. A rigid threshold in the discontinuous transmission mode is set so as to be 65. When the sum (Σlj) of lj is smaller than 100, the frame is detected as a defective frame.

    Abstract: A receiver (200) capable of operating in a discontinuous transmit mode includes a soft decision decode (210) producing a soft output and generating window error signals. A window error detector (214) is coupled to the soft decision decoder for detecting a bad frame when the window error exceeds a bad frame threshold, wherein the threshold is altered based on the discontinuous transmit mode. The soft decision decoder may be a turbo decoder which stops iterative processing of the data associated with a window when the window error detector detects that the window does not result in a bad frame indication.
