Abstract: A paging signalling system communicates messages via a synchronous signal. The synchronous signal is divided into a plurality of frames (100) in which selective groups of pagers decode. A signal (102) within the frame (100) causes groups of pagers to decode in various frame (104, 106), wherein several groups of pagers may be combined into a signal frame to decode messages (110). Embodiments of the invention include first type of a plurality of groups of pagers, each group having a common maximum frame rate, a second type of a single group of pagers having a unique maximum frame rate, and a third type of a single group of pagers having no maximum frame rate. The three types of groups may decode the synchronous signal.

Abstract: A selective call receiver receives a signal having a baud rate and comprising a number of phases. The number of phases are time division multiplexed to form the signal. The selective call receiver has selective call address information assigned thereto and includes a receiver for receiving and demodulating the signal and a memory for storing predetermined information. A demultiplexer is coupled to the receiver and the memory for demultiplexing the signal to recover one of the number of phases in response to the predetermined information and the baud rate. The selective call receiver also includes a decoder coupled to the demultiplexing means for decoding said one of said number of phases of said signal to derive a selective call message therefrom.

Abstract: A paging receiver has an indicator capable of illluminating in one of a plurality of colors. The color of illumination is selected in response to the address received by the pager. The indicator identifies the address by the color illuminated. The indicator also indicates weather a message is protected, read, about to be protected or about to be deleted by the color and color sequence of the indicator. The color indicator also indicates if the paging receiver is about to be turned off. The indicator may also serve as a back-light for a display when the paging receiver includes a display. Signals within the information to be displayed may change the color or change the intensity of the back-light, these signals may also turn the back-light off or on.

Abstract: A paging system has a signal for transmitting a variable amount of messages to paging receivers. The signal has a synchronization signal (100), an address field (104), an information and a boundary signal indicative of the boundary between the address field and the information field. Each message has an address which is included within the address field and may have message information which is included in the information field. The information field includes two portions, a first portion (106) having a plurality of packets for holding a predetermined amount of information and a second portion (108) for holding a variable amount of information. If the message information is greater than the predetermined amount, it is stored in the second portion of information field and a vector signal indicating the location of the message information is stored in the first information field.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for processing a signal is capable of determining the presence or absence of a signal having a predetermined baud rate. By initializing counting registers to either first or second values, and receiving the signal, either the presence or absence of the baud rate may be more rapidly detected. Rapid detection provides for improved battery savings when the invention is used within a portable receiver such as a pager. The invention provides for positive detection of the predetermined baud rate while rejecting a baud rate being an integer divisor of the predetermined baud rate. Additionally, as a result of the determination of the presence of the predetermined baud rate, a sample clock may be established for receiving data at the baud rate.
