Abstract: A digital voice-privacy system uses a delta modulator to convert voice information to digital data which then is encoded by combining the output of the delta modulator with a digital signal derived from selected stages or a shift register and a programmable code memory with the resultant data train being fed back as the input signal train for the shift register. The output of the last stage of the shift register is the encoded data. The data is decoded by a similar system, with the received signals being supplied to the input of a shift register and programmable code memory circuit comparable to the one used in the encoder to form a decoding signal which is combined with the encoded digital data to provide an output to a delta demodulator, the output of which then is the desired decoded voice information.

Abstract: A portable duplex radio telephone system includes at least one base station transmitter having a predetermined base transmission range, and a plurality of portable or mobile units each having a predetermined portable maximum transmission range predeterminately shorter than the base transmission range. Satellite receivers are deployed about the base station within the base station transmission range for receiving transmissions from the portable units. The base station transmitter transmits signals on a signalling channel and on at least one communications channel. Each transmitter signalling and communications channel has a frequency that is paired or associated with a receiving frequency of the satellite receivers. In a multiple base station system, the portable receiver has means for scanning the base station transmitter signalling frequencies and for tuning the portable transmitter to the signalling frequency associated with the frequency of the strongest signalling signal received from the base transmitter. When communication is initiated, the portable transmitter and receiver are automatically retuned to one of the communications channels as determined by the strongest signalling frequency received by the portable receiver and by channel availability. Means are also provided in the system to continuously locate a portable unit and switch the operating frequency thereof as the portable unit moves between base station transmitter coverage areas. Further means are provided to automatically reduce the output power of each portable transmitter to the minimum level required for satisfactory communications in order to reduce battery drain and the interference caused by the portable transmitters.

Abstract: RADIOTELEPHONE SYSTEM EMPLOYING DIGITIZED SPEECH/DATA AND EMBEDDED SIGNALLING A radiotelephone system is disclosed in which the signalling protocol for the system is embedded in the frame synchronization of the digital messages transmitted on the system. Multiple system state control functions are accomplished via a high autocorrelation, low cross correlation bit sequence synchronization signal. System state communication is achieved by utilizing a sequence of normal synchronization words and their ones complement inverses. Reliabilty of the coding is achieved by detecting normal or inverse words as binary levels when fewer than a predetermined number of bit errors exist in the bit sequence. If the predetermined number of bit errors is exceeded, a selected binary one or zero is substituted. This selected sequence of binary levels is decoded and the Hamming distance between a masked decoded sequence and a masked selected sequence is calculated. If the Hamming distance calculation yields a number greater than the error correction capability of the coding function, a new set of substituted binary levels is tried, otherwise the decoded sequence is accepted as correct.
