Abstract: A quality dispatch service on a CDMA based wireless system (50). To achieve spectral efficiency and fast access for follow-up calls, in response to a request by a talkgroup member (A-D) to have a group call established, the non-requesting (listening-only) members (B-D) are allowed to establish a low-rate (non-voice) signaling link (54-56) in the reverse direction (inbound) for the limited purpose of (i) providing forward power control information to the fixed infrastructure; (ii) requesting soft hand-off when required; and (iii) maintaining the correct reverse link power control to allow for fast channel access for a follow-on call.

Abstract: A method of providing a communication unit (10) access to a shared communication resource. In the communication unit, a clock (123) is maintained, and the unit detects the time when an inhibit period on the shared communication resource begins, and the time at which it concludes. When access to the shared communication resource is desired, the unit attempts to access the communication resource based on the time at which access was desired, as well as the times at which a detected inhibit condition began and concluded. A virtual time clock runs only during non-inhibit periods. Access to the communication resource is then based on when the virtual time clock equals the desired access time.

Abstract: A communication resource is subdivided as a function of time into a plurality of time slots (210), which may then be further subdivided on a non-periodic basis into a number of sub-slots (220). In a slot or sub-slot, communication units (101) may utilize the communication resource according to a specific set of access methods defined for that slot or sub-slot. In one embodiment the time slots are subdivided on a non-periodic basis into a least two random access sub-slots, during which communication units may either request one or more reserved time slots, or send unreserved data packets (240). In response to requests for reserved time slots from a requesting communication unit, one or more reserved time slots are provided for the use of the requesting communication unit.

Abstract: A controller (120), in response to receiving a request for a group call (201) targeting a group (101), allocates at least one power adjustment channel to the group call (202) and sends identification of the at least one power adjustment channel to at least some of the subscriber units in the group (203). Using the at least one power adjustment channel, the controller also sends unique power adjustment information to each of the at least some subscriber units (204). Unique power adjustment channel access information is also sent to the subscriber units so that each subscriber unit can receive its own unique power adjustment information (503) and adjust its inbound transmission power (504) in response. In this manner, efficient reverse power control is provided for multiple subscriber units thereby facilitating group calls in CDMA systems.
