Abstract: A selective call receiver receives a signal having a baud rate and comprising a number of phases. The number of phases are time division multiplexed to form the signal. The selective call receiver has selective call address information assigned thereto and includes a receiver for receiving and demodulating the signal and a memory for storing predetermined information. A demultiplexer is coupled to the receiver and the memory for demultiplexing the signal to recover one of the number of phases in response to the predetermined information and the baud rate. The selective call receiver also includes a decoder coupled to the demultiplexing means for decoding said one of said number of phases of said signal to derive a selective call message therefrom.

Abstract: In a communications system wherein a transmitted message is preceded only by an address, an asynchronous circuit (100) detects the address and provides an initializing signal (at Q-NOT of 105) to a synchronous clock recovery circuit (114 and 116) so that the first bit of the recovered clock signal (at Q3 of 114) is synchronized to the first bit of the message. During the transmission of the message the synchronous clock recovery circuit makes minor adjustments to the phase of the recovered clock to maintain synchronization between the recovered clock and the message. At the termination of the message, the synchronous clock recovery circuit is inhibited (by Q of 106) until the asynchronous circuit detects another address.

Abstract: Apparatus (10) and method is disclosed for storing and later retransmitting messages for system pagers (12) with acknowledge back capability that nevertheless fail to acknowledge back in the first instance. Addresses are retransmitted for pagers (12) initially failing to acknowledge back on a continuous periodic basis until such acknowledge back is received, at which time the message intended therefor is sent, or a predetermined time period expires.

Abstract: A selective call receiver (106) has a frequency synthesizer (708) for scanning a plurality of frequencies to determine a control channel to receive a signal and a receiver (704) for receiving the signal representative of an available frequency associated with a geographic region. The signal includes a channel identifier (404), a frequency assignment (406) and an active channel indicator (408). A processor (712) associates the channel identifier (404) with the frequency assignment (406) in response to the active channel indicator (408) indicating an available frequency of the geographic region and a memory (720) stores channel identifiers (404) associated with frequency assignments (406) designating available frequencies (408). The receiver (704) receives an address (333) and the channel identifier (404) on the control channel, a decoder (714) decodes the channel identifier (404) associated with the frequency assignment (406) to determine the available frequency where a message will be transmitted and the frequency synthesizer (708) switches to the available frequency indicated by the channel identifier (404) for receiving the message.

Abstract: A selective call receiver (30) for receiving selective call signals in a universal synchronization code operating mode receives signals having the conventional POCSAG sync code and signals having dual sync codes and decodes the signals appropriately to recover personal and information services messages. Whether the receiver (30) is operating in a conventional POCSAG system or a dual sync code system, the receiver (30) conserves battery power by activating the high battery draining receiver circuit (34) only during frames (106) of the signal (100) wherein personal message addresses or database information is likely to appear. The frames (106) where the personal message addresses are likely to appear and where the database information appear are indicated by a frame byte stored in a memory (48) with the corresponding address.

Abstract: Apparatus and method is disclosed for automatically, or by selective response, call forwarding a message to one or more system pagers(12)which have an acknowledge back capability. In one embodiment, disclosed apparatus automatically forwards a message to another system pager upon the initially called pager failing to acknowledge back within a predetermined time period. Such other pager is determined from a set paging hierarchy list(42)included within the paging terminal apparatus itself. In another embodiment, wherein the system pagers have multiple acknowledge back response capability, a called pager(12)can request the received message be additionally call forwarded to one or more other system pagers in accordance with the particular acknowledge back response chosen by the called pager user.

Abstract: An apparatus for controlling the illumination of a display used to present messages in a pager is described. A microcomputer is used for controlling the operation of the display in response to a read switch being actuated. A light switch, coupled to an illumination circuit provides display illumination upon the light switch being manually activated. The microcomputer also couples to the light switch to allow monitoring of the switch actuation. Upon actuation of the light switch, when a message is being displayed, the microcomputer will maintain the illumination of the display, even after the light switch has been released. Once the message has been-read, the microcomputer resumes monitoring the light switch, and the illumination of the display is terminated.
