    Abstract: A portable communication device has a first display (132, fig.1) disposed on the front surface of the housing and a second display 130 upon the top of the housing. The display on the top of the housing enables the user to see information as to who is calling even when the phone is carried on a belt or in a holster. The housing 105 may have a moveable portion or flap 114 whereby the first display is covered when the flap is closed. The first display may alternatively be mounted upon the inside surface of the flap (figure 3) rather than on the front of the mobile telephone. Alternatively one display may be mounted on the front of the radiotelephone, the other upon the flap (see figure 9). Controller circuitry (see fig.s 5-7) controls the display areas to display identification information including identification information of the caller on the second display area. Text information may be displayed on the first display area.

    Abstract: A wireless communication device stores in memory a record of a predetermined amount of a communication resource available to the user such as pre-paid call time, battery power or time before an expiry date . If this resource is depleted at an undesirable rate, indicating possible fraudulent use, the device is disabled. An undesirable rate includes the conditions where the rate is slower than normal, the resource is never depleted or is reset to a higher level. If the accumulated call time exceeds a preset limit then the device is also disabled. The device may be a cellular or cordless radiotelephone, pager, two-way radio, personal data assistant or personal computer using radio or infra-red wavelength signals. A disposable radiotelephone for outgoing calls only is described in detail which is thrown away or recycled when the communication resource is used up.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for varying coupling of a radio frequency (RF) signal (408). This is advantageously used for increasing the dynamic range of a power detector (406) in an automatic power level control loop (403) of a transmission unit (404), while maintaining transmission unit efficiency at higher power levels. This is accomplished by selecting between a first operating mode of the RF coupler (405) having strong coupling, responsive to a first predetermined power level, such that the RF coupler (405) produces a first coupled RF signal (509) responsive to the RF signal (408) and a second operating mode of the RF coupler (405) having weak coupling, responsive to a second predetermined power level, such that the RF coupler (405) produces a second coupled RF signal (510) responsive to the RF signal (408).

    Abstract: The dual mode power amplifier apparatus of the present invention is comprised of a number of power amplifiers (101-103) coupled to a voltage convertor (104) through their collector supply lines. A mode select line (105) is connected to the voltage convertor (104) to select a digital or analog mode. The preferred embodiment of the present invention is used in a hybrid digital/analog radiotelephone. In the digital mode, the voltage convertor (104) is turned off and the voltage convertor (104) supply voltage is allowed through to the collectors of the power amplifiers (101-103). This permits the power amplifiers (101-103) to operate with optimum linearity in a digital transmission environment. In an analog environment, the voltage convertor (104) is on and supplying a reduced voltage to the power amplifiers (101-103) allowing more efficient operation in this mode.
