Abstract: A two-way communication apparatus has a user interface comprising a touchpad 10 and a controller 16 responsive to the touchpad 10. The touchpad 10 has a plurality of permanent images 26, 30 associated therewith. Selected ones of the permanent images 26, 30 are made visible and others are concealed based upon the operating mode of the two-way communication apparatus. Also mentioned is a method of inputting commands wherein the controller 16 recognizes a plurality of bi-directional strokes (gestures), including a first bi-directional stroke indicative of a first telephone command and a second bi-directional stroke indicative of a second telephone command, from the touchpad 10. Dialled digits may be input, using largely uni-directional strokes (fig7), whilst # and *keys are input using tri-directional strokes.

The direction (24) comprises an azimuth angle (26) and an altitude angle (30). A wide-angle digital camera system (40) captures at least one wide-angle image. An image processor (44) is responsive to the audio processor (34) to process the at least one wide-angle image to generate at least one perspective corrected image (46) in the direction (24) of the audio source (22).

Abstract: A wireless infrared peripheral interface (10) for a communication device (12) includes a cellular radio transceiver (14). The peripheral interface (10) includes at least one infrared signal source (16) and at least one infrared detector (18). The signal source and detector are coupled with dispersing optics (20). An interface circuit (28) is coupled to the infrared signal source and detector. A processor (30) is coupled to the interface circuit (28), wherein the processor (30) controls the interface circuit to process data signals that are conveyed through the infrared source (16) and detector (18) so as to communicate with a peripheral device that is proximate to the communication device (12). The dispersing optics (20) reduces the dependency of optical alignment between the infrared data ports of the peripheral device and communication device (12). The dispersing optics may comprise dispersive lenses; a fibre optic cable disposed around the periphery of the device (12); a beam splitter of lenses facing in opposite directions; or more than one set of IR source (16) and IR detector (18), each set facing in a different direction.
