    Abstract: A radio beacon (105(5)) for use in location determination inside a building (103), mine or other enclosure transmits a RF signal equivalent to a partially coded GPS (Global Positioning System) signal which includes an identity code identifying the beacon but null data in the ephemeris and/or almanac data field. The signal is received by a commercially available GPS receiver. The GPS receiver selects the best signal and recognises a beacon identity code and detects that the signal is from a radio beacon rather than a GPS satellite. It then determines the location of the mobile station as being approximately the known location of the identified beacon.

    Abstract: A radio beacon ( 105 ( 5 )) is for use in location determination inside a building ( 103 ) or other enclosure. The beacon transmits a RF signal equivalent to a partially coded GPS (Global Positioning System) signal which includes an identity code identifying the beacon but null data in at least one GPS data field. A mobile station ( 101 ) includes a GPS receiver ( 208 ) for receiving GPS signals and a processor ( 202 ) for processing data extracted from signals received by the GPS receiver. The GPS receiver is operable to receive a signal from a transmitting beacon ( 105 ( 5 )). The processor is operable to recognise a beacon identity code from the data extracted from the received signal and thereby detect that the signal is from a radio beacon rather than a GPS satellite and thereby to apply a further procedure to calculate the location of the mobile station based upon a known location of the identified beacon.

    Abstract: A subscriber unit, e.g. for GSM, has an associated adjunct location determining receiver e.g. GPS. On receipt of a user or terminal initiated location request 207, the GPS receiver determines location 209, using satellite transmissions including further data such as ephemeris correction data valid for a short time period e.g. 3-4 hours. If no location request is ongoing, the GPS receiver is powered down 211, thereby reducing battery consumption. Subsequently, a location estimate is derived from the GSM network, e.g. by triangulation at the terminal or by the network base stations, or by cell ID. If the terminal is now separated from the ephemeris data reference point by greater than a threshold 217. the GPS receiver is powered up 219 and location determined. In any case if a predetermined time, e.g. 2 hours has elapsed 221 the GPS receiver is powered up. In alternatives, the GPS location may be performed by the network, rather than in the handset. This arrangement can also improve accuracy and shorten time to first position fix, as well as saving power.

    Abstract: An interleaver (100) is for re-arranging in each of L cycles a first set of K data elements into a second set of K data elements using a permutation vector which defines, based on the calculation in each cycle of a sequence c m , an even number of pairs of positions of elements in the first set to be swapped, wherein c m satisfies a quadratic congruence condition. A processor (103) computes for each of the L cycles a value of the sequence c m and, based on the value, a set of indexes indicating at least two pairs of elements to be swapped, and a processor (101) swaps in each cycle pairs of indicated elements, the swapping of pairs in each cycle being done together in a parallel swapping operation.
