    Abstract: An apparatus for testing mechanical devices using sonic signatures in order to determine the operability of the device under test. The output from the sensor (10) is first examined for out-of-range random results in order to discard deviant samples from a general factory environment. The preliminary filter (20) is used to restrict the output of the sensor to frequency ranges related to the inherent structural characteristics of the device under test. After the signal has been rectified by rectifier (30), it provides important information about the rotational components of the device under test. The signal is then passed to secondary filter (40) for minimizing data collection requirements. The signal is then passed to a fast Fourier Transformer (50) to determine the frequency content of the signal and is compared to references (60) for known parameters of the device under test.
