    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable device having a plurality of selectable display modes to provide an image to a viewer.
    SOLUTION: The portable device includes an image source, a control-processing unit for providing image data to the image source, a light source for providing illumination light to the image source, and an optical device having a plurality of optical elements for forming an image from emitted light of the image source along a light passage of the optical device. The optical device is structured to change based on the display mode in which image formation is selected. At least one of the display modes is used for forming a virtual image through an exit pupil expander, and the display modes includes a mode for sensing the image formed on a surface provided on the light passage by a viewer. In the mode, the image formed on the surface provided on the optical passage adjacent to the portable device is sensed by the viewer.
