PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an input order independent character input mechanism. SOLUTION: An apparatus for providing an input order independent character input mechanism may include a processor. The processor may be configured to receive an input containing an element corresponding to a portion of a character being entered by a user independent of an order for inputting the element based on the portion of the character corresponding to the element. Receiving an input includes receiving at least one radical. The processor may additionally be configured to retrieve at least one candidate character for the character being entered based at least in part on the received element. The processor may also be configured to provide a selection of candidate characters including the at least one candidate character to the user. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a character input method.SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises: means for forming a key pad having a plurality of keys allocated to radicals or strokes different from one another, on a touch panel; means for detecting the fact that any key which is allocated to a radical is selected among the plurality of keys; means for searching for a plurality of candidate characters independently of the stroke order of characters on the basis of the radical corresponding to the selected key; means for displaying the plurality of candidate characters side by side on the basis of the frequency of use; means for detecting the fact that any key which is allocated to a stroke is selected among the plurality of keys; means for narrowing the plurality of candidate characters independently of the stroke order of characters on the basis of the stroke corresponding to the selected key; and means for displaying, according to the fact that selection for any of the candidate characters is performed, a word or a phrase associated with the selected candidate characters on the touch panel.

In accordance with an example embodiment of the present invention, a method for proximity based input is provided, comprising: receiving information on presence of an object in close proximity to a touch screen surface, detecting a display element currently associated with the object, the display element being visualized to be displaced from the screen surface level in the z-direction substantially perpendicular to the screen surface, and adapting the display element on the basis of distance between object and the screen, wherein the display element is visualized to locate substantially at the touch screen surface level in response to detecting the object to touch the touch screen surface.
