    Abstract: Apparatus and a method of spray coating an article (10) such as a plastic container with a gas barrier coating of a polymer dispersion. The apparatus includes a spray coating booth (14) including one or more spray nozzles (29) dispensing a spray of a coating material into the surface of a series of articles continuously moving into and out of the coating booth (14) on a conveyor (12). An oven (16) for drying the wet coating may be used to remove the water from the coating to form a dried film on the container without distorting the container, and in this case the oven is separated from the booth by the conveyor. Means (18) may be provided for rotating the bottles during coating, during transport between the spray coating booth and the oven, and while in the oven. The coating booth includes a system (82, 84) for containing and removing both airborne and liquid overspray from the booth, and preferably a dual delivery system (120, 124A/B, 128) for delivering the coating material to the spray nozzles and for reverse flushing the delivery system. The system operates to provide a continuously moving series of containers with a spray coating at production rates suitable for commercial applications.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide an electrostatic spraying apparatus which is safe and is high in coating material transfer efficiency by reducing the amt. of a conductive material used for a rotary atomizer as far as possible. CONSTITUTION: The liquid coating material in an annular cavity 34 is admitted through a coating material passage 36 into a forward cup cavity 38 by rotation of a cup 20 and is moved toward a front atomizing edge 42 along an inside cup wall 40. The coating material is then atomized by centrifugal force to form an atomizing spray pattern 29. The liquid coating material is electrified by coming into contact with an electrifying electrode 46 at the time of moving from the passage 36 to the front atomizing edge 42 of the cup. The forward projecting ends of conductors 214, 218b and 220b part extremely slightly from the outside surface of a semiconductor ring 102 and when high voltage is transmitted from an insulation cable 74 to the conductors 214, 218b and 220b, the electrostatic energy is transmitted beyond this spacing to the semiconductor ring 102 and is transferred to the ring electrode 46 via a pin 104, by which the liquid coating material is contactually electrified.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To decrease the amt. of the motion and inertia required to be controlled during the operation of a spray gun by combining the motion of a spray gun in X, Y and Z directions and the motion of a spray nozzle independent therefrom. CONSTITUTION: The spray gun 12 is moved along an X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis by a robot arm. Further, a controller associated with robot arm control controls the operation of an air cylinder 128 in such a manner that the speed and frequency of the rotation of an indexing ring 118 may be changed at need, by which a piston 130, is advanced and retreated rapidly or slowly and/or at high or low frequencies and rotational motion is applied to the spray nozzle 48. Further, a sleeve 176 is moved downward along an extension part 26 by an air cylinder 154 and a nozzle inclining lever 184 is rotated clockwise via a crank arm 188, by which the release port 66 of the spray nozzle 48 is inclined and rotated.
