Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To give a replay function and/or a slow motion function to a receiver for the video contents which are received and projected via a TV set, etc., by using a memory which has a 1st part that receives instantaneously the data and a 2nd part which preserves a data packet that is previously received and displayed and also shifted from the 1st part. SOLUTION: A memory of a receiver has a 1st part which functions as a moving buffer memory part and a 2nd part. The 1st part moves, updated as the time elapses and preserves a data packet that is displayed the latest. When a prescribed time elapses, the 1st part is updated by a later data packet and the data packet so far preserved in the 1st part is shifted to the 2nd part. The 2nd part preserves the data packets in a certain time sequence, and at least a part of duration of the time of determined according to the size of the memory.

Abstract: The invention relates to an improvement in receivers for receiving broadcast video data for generating a video display from said data and also to the method of displaying said data. The invention provides for a memory into which received data can be directed and said data may also at the same time or previously have been used to generate a video display on a display screen. The data in the memory can be called up to generate a video display thereafter and the speed of the display may be selected so as to provide, for example, a slow motion or freeze frame display. The facility allows the user to select to regenerate a display which they may already have seen at the initial video display and further to generate the display in a slow motion sequence. The memory can be updated with newly received data. In addition, or alternatively, the memory may be provided to receive packets of data which are selected for storage and said packets of data in conjunction to provide a data sequence which can be selected to be viewed.

Abstract: The invention provides a method for searching the frequency range of a digital data receiving device, said method including the steps in one embodiment of firstly identifying and disregarding analogue carrier frequencies in the range, then proceeding to estimate the initial starting frequency for a digital carrier by dynamic real-time pre-processing of the spectrum profile and then obtaining successive samples of the frequency range from the start position for the carrier until the centre frequency for the carrier is located. In one embodiment the method includes the prediction of the centre frequency estimations of all digital carriers for respective channels in the range prior to the search commencing. The method reduces the possibility of locking to analogue carriers, and can reduce the time required to perform a search in comparison to the current digital carrier frequency "search & lock" procedure

Abstract: Improvements to a digital network 2 and items on the network are provided. The digital network includes a number of items of electrical apparatus, each item of apparatus provided with identification means in the form of private and public encryption keys for allowing communication with other items of apparatus in the network, authentication and compatibility of the private and public encryption keys relating to an item of apparatus being required by said other items of apparatus so that communication can take place between said item and other items of apparatus. If network identification means are updated and an item of apparatus in said network is rendered invalid by said update, new private and/or public encryption keys are generated for said item of apparatus to allow said apparatus to be identifiable and operable as part of said network. The network may further use system renewability messages (SRM) to identify the compatability of items of apparatus for use in the network. The digital network may be an IEEE 1394/Firewire/iLink network and may contain items such as a digital TV (DTV) 8, DVMS 10, DVD player 6, hard disk drive 4 or broadcast data receiver (BDR) 12 such as a set-top-box (STB).
