The plasma display device has a sustain pulse generating circuit for generating sustain pulses in a sustain period. The sustain pulse generating circuit generates at least two kinds of sustain pulses of different rising gradients in the sustain period, generates a predetermined number of sustain pulse whose rising gradient becomes steeper to the latter half in at least one-side electrode in the sustain period after first two sustain pulses and except an erasing pulse, and continuously generates the sustain pulses while the rising gradient of the sustain pulses is varied in response to the light emitting rate of the plasma display panel in the sustain period.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce cost of a plasma display panel device, while realizing high luminance and power saving. SOLUTION: In a driving method of a plasma display panel having a plurality of display electrode pairs, each of which consists of a scanning electrode and a sustaining electrode and constitutes a display line, in a sustaining period, sustaining pulses having a first period and a second period are applied to the display electrode pairs, by using a sustain pulse generating circuit having a capacitor and an inductor. In the first period, electric power accumulated in the capacitor is supplied to an inter-electrode capacitance of the display electrode pair. In the second period, electric power accumulated in the inter-electrode capacitance of the display electrode pair is recovered to the capacitor. In the sustaining period of at least one subfield, the length of the first period of the sustaining pulse to be applied to the display electrode pair is set based on a maximum value of a display load for each display line and the number of high-load lines obtained by using the number of display lines with a display load of a predetermined value or more. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform high quality image display by generating stable sustaining discharge even in a high-definition plasma display panel. SOLUTION: In this plasma display device, writing discharge is generated selectively by discharge cells in a writing period of a subfield having the writing period and a sustaining period, sustain pulses by the number corresponding to the luminance weight are applied to a display electrode in the sustaining period, and sustaining discharge is generated by the discharge cells made to generate the writing discharge. The rising and falling of the sustain pulses are performed by LC resonance between the inter-electrode capacitance and inductor of the plasma display panel. In the sustaining period of at least one subfield, a first sustain pulse having at least a predetermined rising time and a second sustain pulse having a rising time shorter than the predetermined rising time are applied. The plasma display panel is driven so that the second sustain pulse is included in the period from the start of the sustaining period to the midway of the sustaining period. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display device capable of performing high-quality image display by generating stable sustaining discharge even in a high-definition panel. SOLUTION: The plasma display device drives a panel by providing a writing period that writing discharge is generated selectively by discharge cells, and a sustaining period that sustaining discharge is generated by applying sustain pulses by the number of times in proportion to luminance weight to a display electrode by the discharge cells made to generate the writing discharge. As to several sustain pulses to be applied to the display electrodes at the latter half of the sustaining period, that is, the sustaining period in a subfield just before a subfield having small luminance weight and a small number of sustain pulses, which is a subfield having large luminance weight, a period when rising time of the sustain pulse applied to one of the display electrodes overlaps on falling time of the sustain pulse applied to the other of the display electrodes is set so that midpoint potential of a capacitor of a power recovery part may not be lowered. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve display quality and luminous efficiency in a plasma display panel. SOLUTION: A plasma display device has a plasma display panel which is provided with a plurality of discharge cells having a display electrode pair composed of a scan electrode and a sustain electrode, and a sustaining pulse generating circuit which applies a sustaining pulse to each of the display electrode pair using a power recovery circuit which causes rising or falling edge of the sustaining pulse by resonating inter-electrode capacitance and inductor of the display electrode pair and a clamp circuit which clamps a voltage of the sustaining pulse to a power source voltage or base potential. The sustaining pulse generating circuit generates sustaining pulses, wherein a time point of starting of a rising edge of the sustaining pulse applied to one electrode of the display electrode pair and a time point of starting of falling edge of the sustaining pulse applied to another electrode coincide each other, and the time of rising of the sustaining pulse applied to one electrode of the display electrode pair, and the time of the falling of edge of the sustaining pulse applied to another electrode are different.
