PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-purity texaphyrin metal complex, a method for making the complex, and a method for using the complex to treat a disease or the like including cancer and atherosclerosis.SOLUTION: The texaphyrin metal complex has anticancer activity and is represented by formula 1 (wherein: M is a trivalent metal cation such as Gd; each X is OHor the like; Rto Rare independently H, OH or the like; Rand Rare independently H or 1 to 6C alkyl; and each x is independently selected from 2 to 6).

A method of phosphate ester hydrolysis including incubating a solution of an aqueous phosphate ester with a texaphyrin metal complex. The metal is a metal cation having catalytic activity for ester bond hydrolysis in aqueous solution, in particular, a lanthanide metal cation, preferably Eu(III) or Dy(III). A preferred substrate is RNA and a preferred texaphyrin is a derivatized texaphyrin having binding specificity, in particular, a texaphyrin covalently coupled to a site-directed molecule, preferably an oligonucleotide.

The present invention provides certain non-symmetric tripyrranes; that is, tripyrranes that do not contain a mirror plane of symmetry perpendicular to the plane containing the tripyrrane. Further, the invention includes texaphyrin compounds and sapphyrin compounds, as well as other polypyrrolic macrocycles, prepared using tripyrranes of Formula (I) as a precursor. These macrocycles are characterized by tripyrrolic portion of the macrocyclic ring having substituents that cause the heterocycle to lack a plane of symmetric perpendicular to the plane of the macrocycle.
