    Abstract: 18 An electro-optical apparatus comprises an objective which scans an optical disc having a transparent protective layer by means of a radiation beam which, through the transparent layer, is focussed on a reflecting recording surface, the objective moving along the optical axis for focussing the radiation beam on the recording layer and moreover performing limited pivotal movement. The angular position of the optical axis of the objective is corrected for obliquity of the surface of the optical disc, correction means being provided to tilt the objective through a correction angle, so that the angle between the optical axis and the normal to the disc surface is reduced.

    Abstract: PHN.8739 08-07-77 An optical scanning device which scans a rotary video disc with the aid of a light beam comrises an objective which performs focussing movements, for focussing a light spot on a recording surface of the video disc, as well as tilting tracking movements and time-error correction movements. Near its lower end the objective is suspended in an impregnated corrugated loudspeaker diaphragm of fabric fibre which enables the various movements of the objective to be made without giving rise to annoying resonant effects. The tracking movements and the time-error correction movements are obtained with the aid of coils which are connected to the objective near the upper end and which are disposed in air gaps of associated permanent magnetic stators.

    Abstract: An optical scanning unit with an objective for the focussing a beam of radiation along an optical axis into a scanning spot on the surface of an information carrier. The scanning unit also has an electromagnetic drive for correcting the position of the objective with respect to the information carrier. The drive has an objective mount supported in an annular, moving magnetic member which is axially magnetized and is arranged coaxially about the optical axis. The drive is further provided with fixed coils which interact with the magnetic member via an air gap. The fixed coils are arranged along at least three radial planes which are normal to the optical axis. Two planes lie in the area of the axial ends of the centrally positioned magnetic member and the third central plane which extends between the two outer radial planes.

    Abstract: Device for detecting radiation and semiconductor device for use in such a device. In a radiation-sensitive semiconductor element which is divided into a number of sub-elements, the surface potential in the sub-elements varies in the case of incident radiation as a result of charge carriers generated by the radiation. As soon as an adjustable threshold value of this potential is reached in one or more of the subelements, a current starts to flow which is signalled by means of a detector and a detection unit. Because the speed of reaching the threshold value depends on the intensity of the radiation, the time measured between the adjustment of the threshold value and the signalling of the current is a measure of the radiation intensity. By means of such a semiconductor element, the associated detection unit and extra electronics, if any, the energy or the cross-section of a beam can be determined and be readjusted; if necessary. Such a semiconductor device can also be used very readily for focusing, for example in VLP apparatus.

    Abstract: An automatic optical focussing system suitable for a video disc player comprises an optical focussing device with an objective which is moved to and fro at high frequency in the direction of its optical axis by electrodynamic drive means. The resultant high frequency component thus superimposed on the signal which has been modulated by the information track of the video disc is employed for automatic control of the position of the objective. For the sake of low power consumption the objective is connected to an oscillation compensation element by means of at least one resilient element, for example a circular plate which compensation element is axially movable relative thereto and, together with the objective and the resilient element, constitutes a mechanical resonant system. On the resonant system a piezo-electric acceleration transducer may be mounted with the aid of which the mechanical resonant system can be included in a selfoscillating loop.
