    Abstract: 1369906 Olefin polymerisation catalysts PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 7 Oct 1971 [8 Oct 1970] 46792/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C3] Silica-based hexavalent chromium-containing olefin polymerisation catalyst is prepared by a method which comprises forming a silica hydrogel by intermittent or continuous addition of aqueous alkali metal silicate solution to acid solution, aging the hydrogel, washing the aged hydrogel to remove alkali metal, forming a silica xerogel by removal of water from the hydrogel with the use of a watersoluble oxygen-containing organic liquid, impregnating the xerogel with chromium (VI) oxide or a compound convertible thereto upon calcination, and calcining the impregnated xerogel. The acid used in the preparation of the hydrogel may be a strong acid, for example sulphuric acid, or a weak acid, for example carbonic acid. The aged hydrogel may be washed with material selected from water, dilute acid solutions and ammonium salt solutions; specified ammonium salts are ammonium nitrate and ammonium salts of organic acids. The water may be removed from the hydrogel by repeated washing with the organic liquid or, when the organic liquid forms an azeotrope with water, by azeotropic distillation; specified organic liquids are n-propyl alcohol, sec-butyl alcohol, acetone, methyl isobutylketone, butyraldehyde, diisobutyl ether, ethyl acetate and isopropyl acetate. As exemplified, catalysts containing 1 weight per cent chromium (elemental basis) in the form of chromium oxide are prepared by a procedure wherein the silica hydrogel is formed from sodium silicate (water glass) solution and dilute sulphuric acid solution, the aged hydrogel is washed initially with ammonium nitrate solution and thereafter with water, the water is removed from the hydrogel either by repeated washing with acetone or by azeotropic distillation using methylisobutylketone or ethyl acetate, the silica xerogel is impregnated with a solution of t-butyl chromate in n-pentane and the impregnated xerogel is calcined at 1600‹F; comparison catalysts are prepared by a similar procedure modified in that either the sulphuric acid solution is added to the sodium silicate solution or the water is removed from the hydrogel either by spray drying or by azeotropic distillation using n-heptane or n-octaine as organic liquid.

    Abstract: Olefin polymn. catalyst comprising Cr oxide supported on silica, alumina, zirconia or thoria in which 1 pt. of Cr is hexavalent and a Ti compd. is deposited on this Cr oxide coated support. The Cr as chromic anhydride or other calcinable Cr compd. is first deposited on the support in aq. medium and then then Ti compd. is deposited in the absence of water and can be in a non-aq. solvent. The Ti compd. has structure R1nTi(OR')m, (RO)mTi(OR')n or TiX4 where m is 1 to 4, n is 0 to 3 and m+n=4, R is C1 to C12 alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl, R' is R or C2 to C12 alkenyl or cyclopentadienyl and X is halogen. Polyolefins having high fusion indices are prepd. using this catalyst which is easier to prepare than other similar catalysts since the Cr is added to the support using an aq. system.
