PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a waterborne thermosetting composition comprising a functional copolymer. SOLUTION: A curable, aqueous film-forming composition is provided, comprising: (a) a copolymer containing a reactive functional group and comprising at least 30 mol% of a residue having an alternating structural unit -[DM-AM]-, wherein DM represents a residue from a donor monomer, and AM represents a residue from an acceptor monomer, at least 15 mol% of the copolymer comprising a donor monomer having the structure (I), wherein R 1 is linear or branched 1-4C alkyl, R 2 is selected from methyl, linear, cyclic or branched 1-20C alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl and aralkyl; and (b) a curing agent having functional groups reactive with the reactive functional groups of (a). The multi-component composite coating composition is also provided, comprising a base coat deposited from a pigmented film-forming composition and a transparent topcoat applied over the base coat. Abstract:
An aqueous dispersion including polymeric microparticles which are prepared in a medium substantially free of organic solvent from a mixture of one or more reaction products of polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and one or more reactive organopolysiloxanes is provided. Pigmented film-forming compositions, curable compositions and topcoats of multi-component composite coating composition containing the above-described dispersions also are provided. The substantially solvent-free film-forming compositions of the invention are storage stable at room temperature and provide coatings with excellent application properties such as sag resistance and tack-free overspray, and excellent performance properties such as hardness and scratch resistance. The film-forming compositions are suitable for wet-on-wet application over a base coat with little or no mudcracking.
