Abstract:
The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for providing visual interfaces to mobile subscriber account services suitable for mobile devices (106) with a small screen (116) and phone keypad (118) communicating, via a wireless data network (102), with a remotely located server device (114) providing the mobile subscriber account services. The mobile subscriber services are accessed through the wireless data network, the server device comprising an account manager managing a user account associated with the client device. The screen display comprises a plurality of user interface components, each corresponding to a particular aspect of the mobile subscriber services. Apart from the interactive voice system and other related systems providing access to subscriber account services, the present invention provides direct visual interface to the mobile subscriber account services and allows mobile subscribers to efficiently, visually and interactively, for example, access desired information and place service requests, through the limited screen and phone keypad at anytime from anywhere with limited costs to the service providers and maximum convenience to mobile subscribers.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a wireless communication system (100) having a storage device (112) for storing a list containing status information and identifiers for a plurality of previously identified wireless communication devices (102). A processor in a mobile communication device can retrieve and store a list containing status information and identifiers for a plurality of previously identified mobile devices from a remote server device and display them on the display screen thereof. By utilizing subscriber status information a user can determine the status of a mobile device associated with the intended recipient of a call or message prior to any attempt to contact that person. The interaction between the mobile device used by the user and the monitored mobile devices can be through a phone call or a text message, either of which can be initiated with minimal device interaction by using embedded contact information.
Abstract:
A system for displaying idle content information on wireless computing devices during idle times is disclosed. A wireless computing device (106) receives from a wireless network (102) idle content information specified by an address identifier identifying a network resource in the wireless network. When the device determined as being idle, the idle content information is displayed on the device display (116). The idle content information might be the network operators customer support telephone number or advertisements. A browser program within the device may be modified to support looping content, interaction with idle displays, automatic scrolling, and automatic updating of idle content information.
Abstract:
A link infrastructure (120) receives a notification via the Internet (104) from a web server device (112) when specific information is updated at the web server device. The specific information is subscribed by a client device (106) and identified by the notification which comprises a subscriber identifier identifying a user account corresponding to the client device. A client device identifier with respect to the subscriber identifier in the notification is obtained and a corresponding message including the notification is sent from the link infrastructure to the client device identified by the client device identifier via a narrowband channel. Thus, when one or more pages of information are updated, rather than sending the entire updated information to users of the devices subscribing to the updated information through the network, the present invention sends a notification to a proxy server that forwards the notification to the users using a messaging system via a low cost narrowband channel. Upon receiving the notification, the users can fetch the updates, when needed, through a wideband channel.
Abstract:
Aliasing techniques that permit flexibly linking to remotely located resources are disclosed. The aliasing techniques are used by a browser application to link to a remote resource located on a network (208) when the location of the remote resource is initially unknown or likely to be changed based on events external to the browser application. For example, the external events can include: relocation of the remote resource, use of a different device, user or carrier service to access the remote resource, or selection of different service levels. In one embodiment, a browser application (216) executes on a wireless remote computing device (218) and couples to a network gateway (210) via a carrier network (214). The aliasing techniques are provided by sending alias information from the network gateway to the browser application, and then having the browser application form an alias table and store the alias table in the wireless remote computing device. The wireless remote computing device can be any of a wide range of devices that have wireless and computing capabilities, including a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant and a portable general purpose computer.

Abstract:
A user interface on a display screen (218) associated with a remote computing device (216) operating a browser program (220) and capable of being coupled to a network server (206) can be configured by receiving user interface components that together form a screen to be displayed on the display screen, each of the user interface components corresponding to a particular aspect of the user interface. The particular content information for the user interface components based on the screen configuration information can then be located and the particular content information for the user interface components retrieved. The content information for the identified user interface component is then displayed on the display screen. Accordingly, replacement, alteration or customization of the user interfaces by network operators is possible.
