Abstract: A method and system for transmitting digital data by extending the sequence numbering range for a selective repeat transmission protocol are described. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, data frames (70) are transmitted including an eight-bit sequence number (72) and a one-bit retransmit flag (74). The one-bit retransmit flag (74) indicates whether the frame is newly transmitted or retransmitted due to a failed first transmission. Transmit (50) and receive (52) systems each maintain a twelve-bit sequence number referred to as a "long sequence number" comprised of the eight-bit sequence number transmitted with each frame and a four-bit extension. The long sequence number is transmitted within a control frame (82) and the eight-bit sequence number is transmitted within the data frame (72).

Abstract: Un procedimiento para transmitir datos entre un transmisor (50) y un receptor (52) usando una trama (70) que tiene un número (72) de secuencia y un indicador (74) de retransmisión que comprende las etapas de: a) transmitir la trama (70) una primera vez con dicho indicador (74) de retransmisión ajustado a falso y comprendiendo el número (72) de secuencia un primer número de bits y ajustado a los bits menos significativos de un código de índice que comprende un segundo número de bits, mayor en número que el primer número, b) aumentar un valor de dicho código de índice para el uso de una trama siguiente; y c) retransmitir la trama (70) una segunda vez con dicho indicador (74) ajustado a verdadero si se recibe en dicho transmisor (50) un mensaje de acuse de recibo negativo que contiene dicho código de índice de la trama (70).
