    Abstract: An improved color picture tube (10) has an inline electron gun (26) for generating and directing three inline electron beams (28), comprising a center beam and two outer beams, along initially coplanar paths (B,G,R) toward a screen (22) of the tube. The beams pass through a deflection zone adapted to have two orthogonal magnetic deflection fields (V,H) established therein. A first (V) of the fields causes deflection of the beams in a first direction perpendicular to the inline direction of the beams, and a second (H) of the fields causes deflection in a second direction parallel to the inline direction of the beams. The gun includes two shunts (74,76;88,90;94,96;100,102) for shunting portions of both deflection fields around the outer beam paths (B,R). Each shunt comprises one magnetically permeable member having an aperture (78;92;98;104) therein and completely surrounds one of the electron beam paths. The improvement comprises each shunt being longer in the first direction than in the second direction, and being symmetric about a central axis of the shunt that parallels the first direction and symmetric about another central axis of the shunt that parallels the second direction.

The improvement comprises the inclusion of means for nonlinearly increasing the effect of the vertical magnetic deflection field on the center beam with increasing angles of vertical deflection of the beams, to provide nonlinear coma correction.

    Abstract: A color display system includes a cathode-ray tube and a yoke. The yoke is a non-converging deflecting type. The cathode-ray tube has an electron gun assembly for generating and directing three electron beams, located at the corners of an equilateral triangle, along paths toward a screen of the tube. The electron gun assembly comprises three electron guns each including electrodes that comprise a beam-forming region and electrodes that form a main focusing lens in the path of an electron beam. The main focusing lens is formed by at least two focusing electrodes. The focusing electrode closest to the beamforming region includes a separated part adjacent to the path of the electron beam. Each separated part forms a portion of a dipole lens structure in the electron beam path. Means are provided for applying dynamic signals to the separated parts which are related to the deflection of the electron beams. The dipole lens structures establish electrostatic dipole fields in the path of the three electron beams that cause the beams to converge at the screen for all angles of deflection.

    Abstract: An improved color picture tube has an inline electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams, a center beam and two side beams, along coplanar paths toward a screen of the tube. The gun includes a main focusing lens for focusing the electron beams. The main focusing lens is formed by two spaced electrodes, each having three separate inline apertures therein. Each electrode also includes a peripheral rim. The peripheral rims of the two electrodes face each other. The apertured portion of each electrode is within a recess set back from the rim. The recesses of the electrodes have substantially the same dimension perpendicular to the inline directions of the inline apertures as the dimension parallel to the inline direction of the inline apertures. However, the recesses have lesser dimensions along diagonals angled at approximately 45 degrees with respect to the inline direction of the inline apertures. The electrodes are connected by four support rods that are peripherally attached to the electrodes along the diagonals.
