Abstract: 1301143 Deflecting light RCA CORPORATION 6 Feb 1970 [13 Feb 1969] 5763/70 Heading H4F A laser beam 21 passing through a transparent medium 20 such as water, KTN or quartz is intercepted at the Bragg angle # by acoustic wavefronts selectively produced from either of two convergently disposed transducers 22, 32 controlled by switch 40 and is thereby diffracted by 2# in either of two senses, 24, 34. A cascade of such deflectors may be used for X and Y deflection. Successive deflections in one direction may be obtained from similar elements using parallel mirror pairs to space the beams after each deflection, Fig. 3 (not shown), or alternatively, Fig. 4 (not shown), diminishing degrees of deflation are provided by each successive element, charging the acoustic frequency and Bragg angle as necessary. The transducers may be separate electrical units, e.g. of cadmium sulphide, or if the medium 20 is suitable it may itself form a transducer, e.g. a lithium niobate crystal provided with electrostatic electrods.
