Abstract: 1,069,699. Automatic character reading. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Sept. 21, 1964 [Oct. 11, 1963], No. 38391/64. Heading G4R. [Also in Division H4] In a character reading apparatus of the kind in which characters are scanned in a raster of scan lines to produce video signals representing the character, the scanner, due to lag, causes residues of one scan to appear in the next and these are removed by delaying each scan in turn and subtracting from the signals in each scan a fraction of the signals from the preceding scan. The moving character (12, Fig. 1, not shown) is imaged on to the screen of a vidicon tube (18) and scanned in a vertical raster by an electron beam two and a half times the height of a character to compensate for misregistry. The scan consists in a vertical stroke always in the same place on the screen, the image moving to produce a series of spaced scans. Since the screen is not discharged entirely by the light falling on it nor recharged entirely by the darkness between scans and because the material of the screen does not respond instantly there is, in the output from each scan, a residue of the previous scan. This is removed by delaying the video signal at (62) and subtracting a selected proportion in difference amplifier (66). A clipping level is derived from the character signals by removing the blanking pulses in gate (82) and applying the character signals to peak detector (84), the peak value being stored in capacitor (86). At the end of scan the peak value is applied by transfer gate (90) to difference amplifier where it is compared with a reference voltage which is the " pure black " blanking pulse signal obtained by clamp (58). The output is applied to a clamp which causes the signals to be quantized in trigger (100) at a fixed proportion of their peak value. The binary output is applied to gate (103) which is controlled to remove the blanking pulses. The " pure black" blanking pulse signal is clamped (at 102) and used to control the automatic gain control of the vidicon.

Abstract: RCA 73,034 A remotely controlled chroma key soft edger is described for use with an analog switcher. The keying signal is low pass filtered and differentially summed with substantially an unfiltered keying signal and the resultant high frequency components are summed with the low pass filtered signal. The gain of the peaking signal is remotely controlled to adjust the summed rise time of the keying signal.

Abstract: A cable equalizer is provided for automatically compensating a signal for cable attenuation as the length of the cable is varied. The circuit detects changes in a reference signal that is inserted in the signal being transmitted over the cable. Any deviation of the reference signal from its normal state at the receiving end of the cable causes the addition of a correction signal to the signal being transmitted so as to compensate the signal for the cable attenuation.
