In apparatus for cyclically measuring the values of variables at remote stations, each represented by a variable resistor, a central station transmits a selected frequency which is blocked by all the stations but one, and at that station a constant current produces a voltage drop across the transducer resistor which is measured and recorded at the central station. As shown, a manually operated switch 27 at the central station T s connects a selected frequency alternating voltage to a pair of lines 57, 58 across which is connected a number of remote stations R 1 , R 2 &c. At each station a filter is connected across the lines 57, 58, only one being tuned to pass the transmitted frequency, thus producing a voltage across the secondary of an input transformer 66, which is rectified at 71 and causes transistors 73, 76 to change from the blocked to the conducting condition. This connects the transducer resistor 80 across the lines 57, 58 in series with a constant current source 10 at the central station T s , and the p. d. across resistor 80 is automatically measured and recorded at 60, the voltage drop across the auxiliary line resistance being balanced out by a compensating circuit 19 having a switch 48 gauged to selector switch 27, choosing an appropriate series resistor. The number of remote stations may be doubled, using the same number of frequencies, by reversing the polarity of the constant current for half the stations, with the rectifier 71 also reversed. The resistors 80 may be sensitive to pressure, temperature, humidity, &c., and an alarm 62 is operated at an extreme value of the variable.
