    Abstract: A CRT (cathode-ray tube) comprises an envelope including a glass faceplate panel and an adjoining glass funnel sealed to the panel, and an elastomeric coating of polyurethane around and adhered to external surfaces of the envelope. The coating may be produced by applying, drying and curing a coating of an aqueous emulsion of polyurethane on the desired external surfaces of the tube. The coating may extend from the panel as far back on the adjoining funnel as desired,and as far forward on the panel sidewalls and viewing window as desired. Also, the polyurethane band may be used in combination with a metal tension band.

    Abstract: A glare-reducing coating, as for a viewing surface of a cathode-ray tube, is prepared by (a) warming the surface of a support to about 30 DEG to 100 DEG C, (b) coating the warm surface with an aqueous solution containing a lithium stabilized silica sol, (c) drying the coating, (d) baking the dry coating at about 150 DEG to 450 DEG C, and then (e) subsequent to said heating step (d), washing the dry coating with hot water. The coating may contain carbon particles or carbon particles and a color-correcting dye.

    Abstract: 1350501 Coated luminescent screens R C A CORPORATION 21 Oct 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 48933/71 Heading B2 [Also in Division H1] A method for providing a black carbon coating on a light reflective metal film covering a c.r.t. phosphor layer (e.g. mosaic of areas such as dots) comprises heating the phosphor layer and metal film to between 50‹C and 75‹C, depositing on the heated film a coating of an organic volatilizable film-forming material from an aqueous dispersion, and depositing upon the coated metal layer an overcoating of carbon particles deposited from a suspension substantially free of organic and inorganic binders. The structure reduces heat reflection to the shadow mask of a three beam colour TV c.r.t. for example. Reduction of electron scattering and secondary emission is also instanced. The organic film forming material may be an acrylic polymer, and the suspension may be amorphous carbon and graphite particles in an aqueous vehicle. There may be a further volatizible film between the metal film and the phosphor layer, and the structure may be heated to 400 to 450‹C in air to volatilize both films. The aqueous dispersion of the organic film-forming material and the carbon particle suspension are preferably deposited by spraying. The metal layer may be a 2500A Al film. In embodiments, the aqueous acrylic resin emulsion may contain, as well as solids, deionized water and red dye solution, amounts being specified, the latter facilitating later inspection. The resin emulsion may be principally ethyl acrylate, copolymerized with equal minor amounts of acrylic and methacrylic monomers and polymers. The carbon suspension may include, in specified amounts, aqueous suspension of colloidal graphite, deionized water, aqueous dispersion of carbon black, containing 0.5 wt. % dispersing agent such as sulfonated lignin and 0.1 wt. % wetting agent such as polyoxyethylene lauryl ether. Coating may be by automatic machinery. Another example includes a spray of acrylic resin solution, deionized water and Rhodemine dye powder and the barrier layer may also be an aqueous emulsion of polystyrene. The metal film has pores enabling escape of gases during baking. The carbon may be in toluene, xylene or dispersed in water, preferably with wetting and dispersing agents. Carbon and Al coatings are preferably 2000 to 3000A thick.

    Abstract: METHOD FOR ADHERING COMPONENTS PLATFORM TO CATHODE-RAY TUBE AND PRODUCT THEREOF A cathode-ray tube with a platform adhered to the external surface of the tube by at least one mass of solidified thermoplastic adhesive and at least one mass of irreversibly-hardened adhesive. The method includes applying masses of liquid thermoplastic and liquid irreversiblyhardenable masses between the platform and the tube surface, and then solidifying each of the adhesive masses.
