    Abstract: A television sync signal generator adapted for ready conversion among various television standards includes a memory (216) in which information related to the magnitude of at least one component of a composite sync signal is stored at address locations each corresponding to at least one particular time in each recurrent television frame. A clock signal generator (212) addresses the memory (216) to sequentially read out the information so the sync signal can be reconstructed. By dividing the sync signal into four intervals which are selected by paging signals from one counter, a reduction in required memory capacity is achieved. For further reducing the number of memory addresses required, each memory address contains information relating to the instantaneous resolution or clock rate. A sample rate controller (820) is coupled to the memory for having the instantaneous clock address rate controlled in response to the contents of the memory.

    Abstract: A block-oriented random-access information storage system is disclosed which includes a cathode ray tube, horizontal and vertical address registers for binary information identifying rectangular coordinate data storage locations on a target in the cathode ray tube, and digital-to-analog converters coupling the contents of the horizontal and vertical address registers to respective horizontal and vertical beam deflection means for the cathode ray tube. The electron beam is deflected to desired information storage locations on the target with great precision by first deflecting the beam to a nearby relatively large indexing electrode on the target, successively modifying the addresses in the horizontal and vertical address registers in response to a feedback signal from the indexing electrode until the beam impinges on a reference point on the target, and then changing the addresses in the address registers the known amounts needed to cause the beam to impinge on the desired nearby data storage location.

The direction of application of the field is reversed during the next display frame.     Abstract: MODULAR TYPE GUIDED BEAM FLAT DISPLAY DEVICE An evacuated envelope has a rectangular display section and a gun section at one edge of the display section. The display section includes front and back walls which are generally rectangular, in closely spaced, parallel relation, and a plurality of spaced, parallel support walls between the front and back walls forming a plurality of parallel channels. The gun section extends across one end of the channels and includes therein gun structure which will direct electrons into the channels. In each of the channels is a beam guide which confines the electrons in a beam and guides the beam along the length of the channel. The beam guide also includes means for selectively deflecting the electron beam out of the guide at selective points along the guide so that the beam will impinge upon a phosphor screen along the inner surface of the front wall. In each of the channels is a scanning deflector which deflects the path of the beam as it passes from the guide to the phosphor screen so that each of the beams will scan a portion of the phosphor screen. The beams in each channel are scanned transversely across its portion of the screen in a transverse direction opposite to that of the beams in the adjacent channels.

[Also in Division G5] To reduce the time required for a nematic liquid crystal cell to change from its transparent state to its light scattering state in response to repetitive voltage pulses of relatively short duration, a number of such pulses being required to cause the liquid crystal to scatter light to an extent which is a function of the amplitude of the pulses, the internal resistance of the cell is increased prior to the application of the repetitive pulses. To increase the internal resistance of the cell the number of free current carriers present in the liquid crystal is reduced by applying either a continuous direct voltage bias (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown) or a continuing train of voltage pulses (Figs. 10-12, not shown) to the cell at a level lower than the voltage threshold for dynamic scattering of the cell. By increasing the internal resistance it is found that the number of excitation pulses necessary to effect a substantial amount of light scattering is reduced, i.e. the " turn-on " time for the cell is reduced. In addition, the cell exhibits a larger scattering effect and is thus brighter. The liquid crystal cells may be arranged in a matrix to form a television type display, and in every frame interval a row of cells is simultaneously " addressed," i.e. have their internal resistances increased, while pulses having amplitudes corresponding to the video information of respective elements of the row are applied to the cells.

    Abstract: An electron gun is controlled by a system which stores the characteristics of the gun in a random access memory. The contents of the memory feed an electron gun driver which properly biases the gun. The characteristics of the gun are stored in the memory by using a collector to sense the electron beam. A comparator is connected to the collector and a reference brightness signal generator. The output of the comparator controls the storage of the characteristics in the memory.
