    Abstract: The present invention provides an improvement in an apertured mask type color picture tube having a faceplate, a cathodoluminescent screen on the faceplate, a corrugated apertured mask adjacent the screen and an electron gun means for producing and directing a plurality of electron beams through the mask to impinge upon the screen. The mask is constructed by first forming the apertures therein and thereafter forming the mask in a corrugated shape. Aperture width in the apertured but unformed mask is adjusted to compensate for stretching and compression of the mask occurring during formation of the mask into a corrugated shape. Therefore, the corrugated mask is substantially free of aperture width variation from that desired caused by forming the mask in a corrugated shape.

The cross-sectional area of each web is substantially uniform across the web.

    Abstract: Colour picture tube which comprises a generally rectangular shadowmask mounted with a spacing with respect to a cathodo luminescent screen, inside the envelope of the said tube, this shadowmask including a perforated central portion, an intermediate peripheral portion surrounding the said perforated central portion, and a skirt-shaped peripheral portion surrounding this intermediate portion, characterised in that at least two opposite sides of the said shadowmask include a plurality of spaced parallel grooves 44, 46 on the two main surfaces of the said mask, in the said intermediate portion 34, the grooves 44 on one main surface being offset with respect to the grooves 46 on the other main surface, so that the presence of grooves enables the grooved region of the said intermediate portion to expand when the mask is formed, thereby reducing the distortion of the perforated central portion 32 of the mask.
