    Abstract: The charge coupled device has its curve of signal voltage against number of charge carriers nonlinear between signal voltage V1 and V2 and linear between V2 and V3. A polarisation charge is applied to the device input potential well of magnitude corresponding to the level of an input signal equal to V2. A number of charge carriers is then added to this charge such that the result corresponds to an input signal whose amplitude lies between (V3-V2) and zero. The charge is then transferred along the device from potential well to potential well.

    Abstract: RCA 76,978 In a television receiver, apparatus for non-linearly processing a vertical detail signal includes a plurality of cascaded amplifier stages responsive to an input vertical detail signal and which exhibit linear and limiting operating regions. Vertical detail signals from the amplifiers are translated and combined with a linear version of the input vertical detail signal. The combined vertical detail signal exhibits a characteristic wherein small amplitude excursions within a first amplitude range are cored, moderate amplitude excursions within a second amplitude range are amplified with a given non-zero gain, and large amplitude excursions within a third amplitude range are pared (attenuated).

    Abstract: Linear operation of a buried channel charge coupled device (CCD) is obtained by employing a bias charge in the input potential well of the CCD. A charge signal proportional to an input signal is added to the bias charge by the "fill and spill" technique, this charge addition occurring in the linear region of the signal versus generated charge transfer characteristic of the CCD. The charge signal is skimmed from the potential well for propagation down the CCD. The potential well containing the bias charge is of substantially larger capacity than the potential wells of the CCD channel to insure that the latter can be fill to close to their capacity, that is, to obtain wide dynamic range in addition to the linear operation.

A first keyed sample and hold circuit provides detail signal amplitude samples to the first amplifier. A second keyed sample and hold circuit provides amplitude samples of sampled detail signals from the output of the first amplifier, to the second amplifier. The sampling circuits operate at different times such that the second sampling circuit is operative in a sampling state at times when the first sampling network is inoperative and exhibits a holding state. Output detail signals from the first and second amplifiers are combined with a linear version of the vertical detail signal to produce a combined, output vertical detail signal manifesting signal coring, amplification, and paring (attenuation) over selected amplitude ranges.

    Abstract: The circuits include a floating diffusion, a source supplying a controllable amount of charge to the floating diffusion and a charge coupled device (CCD) reference register for periodically removing a fixed amount of charge from the floating diffusion. A feedback circuit senses the average voltage at the floating diffusion and adjusts the controllable amount of charge supplied to the diffusion to maintain its average voltage level constant. The feedback circuit may be employed automatically to control the direct voltage bias at the input electrode of a CCD signal register. It may alternatively be employed to control a radiation source serving as the input to the system, or to operate a circuit for indicating the frequency at which the reference CCD register is being drive, or as an input to a current mirror amplifier.

    Abstract: The input terminal of a voltage follower is coupled to a point of reference potential via a first capacitor. A second capacitor is alternately connected across a source of input signals and connected in parallel with the voltage follower during mutually exclusive time intervals whereby an output voltage is produced across the first capacitor proportional to a differential mode component of the input signal. The arrangement is such that internally generated noise is suppressed, very low frequency breakpoints (lag) may be realized with practical element values and there is substantially no tendency toward saturation in the presence of high frequency input noise components.

    Abstract: A charge transfer device (CTD) delay line comb filter for separating the frequency interleaved luminance and chominance components of a composite video signal is provided wherein signal charges representative of the composite video signal within first and second delay lines are effectively subtracted one from the other by alternately passing them under a common, periodically clamped, normally floating sense electrode. This eliminates the need for a phase inverter which can cause imperfect separation due to having a non-zero time delay and not having exactly unity gain.
