Abstract: A video disc package includes a jacket having a record enclosing cavity and an erd acess opening in communication therewith. A record retaining member, comprising a spine and an annular element, is reciprocably mounted within the cavity. The spine portion forms a closure for the jacket when the retaining member is fully inserted therein. The annular element has a through opening for receiving a record. An edge of the spine portion remains exposed upon full insertion of the spine into the jacket. Indicia are secured to the exposed edge of the spine for associating a given side of the spine with the first side of an enclosed record and the other side of the spine with the second side of the enclosed record. The record is enclosed within the package such that its first side is adjacent to the given side of the spine and its second side is contiguous to the other side of the spine.

Abstract: -11- RCA 72,641 A record is removably subject to occupancy of a protective caddy comprising a jacket and a record retaining spine. The record is enclosed in the caddy such that a first side of the record is associated with a given side of the spine. To load a record into a player, such as a video disc player, an occupied caddy is inserted into an input slot provided in the player. A record extracting mechanism mounted in the player removes the retaining spine and the associated record from the jacket during jacket withdrawal subsequent to the occupied cover arrival at a fully inserted position in the player, whereby the record and the spine are retained within the player. A switch mounted in the player is subject to conditioning in a first state in response to insertion of the occupied cover with the given side of the spine facing upward, and is subject to conditioning in a second state in response to cover insertion with the given side facing downward. An indicator responsive to the state of the switch and disposed on the front instrument panel of the player provides an indication of the record side subject to playback.

Abstract: A playback system has a rotatably driven turntable for controlling the operation of a playback stylus device with a video disc record disposed on the turntable. The video information, which is recorded in the form of geometric variations in a spiral groove of the record, is recovered by sensing the capacitance between the stylus playback device and the record surface. The stylus is supported in a housing which is movable in a manner to provide travel of the stylus radially over the record. A stylus control device provides movement of the stylus relative to the housing into and out of engagement with the record surface. Two drive arrangements are provided to be operable in alternative manner to drive the stylus housing over the record. A movable pointer is provided to indicate the position of the stylus along the record. Each of first and second drive means have motion coupling devices, which are controllably engageable in alternative manner to a driving shaft of the turntable. A movable drive change assembly is intercoupled with the respective drive arrangements and the stylus control apparatus, to selectively energize the drive and stylus control apparatuses.

Abstract: One type of video disc record reproducing system senses the capacitance between a stylus and the disc record to reconstruct the video information. The stylus includes a thin conductive element electrode and rides on the record, which is rotated at high speeds. The record, which includes a conductive layer covered with a thin dielectric material, is susceptible to accumulating an electric charge. Disposing a pickup device such as a stylus in proximate or contacting relation with such a charged record disc can produce a destructive discharge of the record through the pickup device which results in damage to the stylus. To minimize the occurence of such damage, the disc record is contacted by means which provide a conductive path through the record spindle to a point of reference potential for the system. In one arrangement, the spindle has a slide bar spring biased to be within the periphery of the spindle when the spindle is stationary. Upon rotation of the spindle, the bar extends out of the spindle to contact the record surface. In a further arrangement, a grounding flipper is pivotally mounted in the spindle. The flipper passes through the record hole and is spring biased to bear against the record surface.
