Abstract: A light valve matrix having rows on a first optically active element and columns on a second optically active element in the path of a beam of polarized light. In response to a control signal applied to a row or column, the portion of the element beneath the row or column rotates or retards the plane of polarization of the light through an angle theta 2 and the remainder of the element rotates or retards the plane of polarization of the light through a different angle theta 1, which may be zero. A polarization angle discriminator means such as a polarizer located between the two elements blocks the light at angle theta 1 and passes all or most of the light at theta 2 and a second polarizer placed after the second element blocks the light rotated through an additional angle theta 1 and passes all or most of the remaining light.

Abstract: A device which can be switched between a light-scattering and a non light-scattering condition comprises, in an element thereof, a volatile liquid and a container having a front viewing face and a darkened back face. The front viewing face has a rough inner surface with a transparent thin resistive layer over the rough surface. The resistive layer takes on the rough surface configuration of the front face. In operation, a current is passed through the resistive layer to heat the volatile liquid until it boils. The rough surface provides a multiplicity of nucleation sites for boiling of the liquid. When the liquid boils, the device scatters light and appears white to the viewer. When the liquid is in its quiescent state, light passes through the front face and the liquid without substantial scattering and the device appears dark due to the darkened back face.

Abstract: The sharp change in optical properties of ferroelectric and other materials at or near their transition temperature (in the case of ferroelectric material, this may be their ferroelectricparaelectric transition temperature, Curie point) is made use of in light deflectors, light valves and the like. The material is heat biased as, for example, by the application of an alternating voltage of an amplitude sufficient to produce the TANDEL or an analogous effect, to a value close to its transition-temperature. An electrical pulse may then be applied to the material for causing sufficient additional heating to raise the temperature of the material to a different value such as one above the transition temperature. The change in optical properties which results may be employed to deflect or otherwise affect a beam of light applied to the material.
