Abstract: A video display system for displaying a wide screen image having an aspect ratio, such as 5:3, greater than the standard, such as 4:3, aspect ratio of the images represented by conventional television video signals, is arranged for displaying such an image of standard aspect ratio without changing the width of the normal wide aspect raster of the display system. To this end the display system includes a signal processor which, in response to a video signal representative of a standard aspect ratio image, produces, for driving the wide aspect ratio display, a processed video signal the line periods of which each include not only the line synchronizing interval and active video interval but also a delay interval ('PAUSE') the effect of which is to determine the position of the displayed standard aspect ratio image within the width of the wide aspect ratio raster.

Abstract: A video display installation for displaying a picture with a format ratio, for example 5:3 which is larger than the standard format ratio, for example 4:3 for pictures which are represented by normal television video signals, is arranged for displaying such a picture with standard format ratio without changing the width of the normal screen pattern of the display apparatus for large format ratio. This is achieved according to the invention by the display installation comprising a signal processing device 402', 1102, which in response to a video signal which is representative of a picture with standard format ratio, produces a processed video signal for the operation of the display device in large format ratio, which processed video signal has line periods which comprise not only a line synchronization interval and an active video interval but also a delay interval ("PAUSE"), the effect of which is to determine the position of the displayed picture in standard format ratio within the width of the screen pattern with large format ratio.
