Abstract: A patient interface for supplying a flow of breathable gas to the airways of a patient may comprise a heat and moisture exchanger (HME). The HME may be positioned in a flow path of the flow of breathable gas. The HME may absorb heat and moisture from gas exhaled by the patient and the incoming flow of breathable gas to be supplied to the patient's airways may be heated and moisturized by the heat and moisture held in the HME.

Abstract: A humidifier (5000) for increasing an absolute humidity of a flow of air to be delivered to a patient’s airways. The humidifier comprises: a reservoir (5110) configured to retain a first volume of water; a humidifier chamber (5200) comprising: an air inlet (5002) for receiving the flow of air; humidifier wick (5230) configured to retain a second volume of water and substantially enclosing a path in the humidifier chamber for the flow of air; a heating element (5220) in thermal contact with the humidifier wick; an air outlet (5004) for delivering the flow of air; an air flow baffle (5208) configured to lengthen a path of the flow of air through the humidifier chamber; and a water delivery mechanism (connecting to 5206) configured to deliver a flow of water from the water reservoir to the water retention feature. The heating element is configured to heat the water retention feature to vaporise the second volume of water to add absolute humidity to the flow of air. The humidifier wick is removable from the humidifier chamber.

Abstract: The present disclosure seeks to provide a more efficient or reliable humidifier for a respiratory therapy device using a wick as a water retention feature. A humidifier for humidification of air to be delivered to a patient’s airways may include a humidification chamber, a reservoir and a water delivery mechanism. The humidification chamber may include a water retention feature such as a wick that encloses part of the flow path, a heating element for heating the humidification chamber to vaporise water retained by the wick, and an air flow baffle configured to promote humidification. The wick may be anisotropically configured, for example to improve a rate of humidification of the airflow or humidification efficiency. The humidifier may be further configured to execute one or more algorithms, for example to determine a condition of the wick or to detect condensation in the flow path. In some forms, the humidifier may also comprise algorithms for controlling one or more components of the humidifier such as to control the build up of foreign matter on the wick.

Abstract: A method of determining suitability of a humidifier wick of a humidifier for increasing an absolute humidity of a flow of air to be delivered to a patient’s airways by a respiratory therapy device, the humidifier comprising an air inlet configured to receive the flow of air from a pressure device, an air outlet configured to deliver the flow of air to a patient interface from the humidifier chamber with added humidity, the humidifier wick, and a controller configured to receive one more signals and/or generate one or more signals, and the humidifier wick being configured to retain a volume of water. The method comprises: providing a set of input values to the controller, the set of input values being indicative of a condition of the humidifier wick and the set of input values are provided to the controller by at least one of user input, at least one sensor, and a memory device; determining, based on the set of input values and a set of reference values, a condition set of the humidifier wick with the controller; and generating a signal with the controller based on the determined condition set to indicate a suitability of the humidifier wick for use in the humidifier.
