    Abstract: A p-diphenol is oxidized to a p-quinone with oxygen in presence of rhodium which has been pretreated with a reducing agent. The p-diphenol may be that produced in a process for making vinyl esters of C1-4 aliphatic carboxylic acids (e.g. vinyl acetate) from ethylene and the acid in presence of a p-quinone, a halide of Pt, Os, Ir, Pd, Rh or Ru and an alkali metal salt of the acid, in which case the regenerated p-quinone is used in a further such process. Specified quinones are benzoquinone, 2-methyl-benzoquinone and chloro-, bromo- and 2,5-dichlorobenzoquinones.

    Abstract: Ethylene is polymerized by means of a catalyst prepared from the reaction of Al with TiCl4 in presence of a liquid diluent comprising one or more saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons and one or more aromatic hydrocarbons. The latter constituent is preferably present as a minor proportion (particularly at least 0.5%, especially 0.5-10% by volume) of the diluent mixture, which is preferably a blend of cyclohexane and benzene. It is preferable that the polymerization process includes the following features: (a) Al : TiCl4 molar ratio exceeds 3 : 1; (b) ethylene contains, per c.c. TiCl4, 20-200 c.c. (at N.T.P.) of oxygen (in examples, 50 c.c. per g. of TiCl4); (c) polymerization is effected at 110-150 DEG C. and at most 50 atmospheres pressure.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized by means of a catalyst prepared from reaction of Al with TiCl4 in presence of a liquid diluent comprising one or more saturated or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons and one or more aromatic hydrocarbons. The latter constituent is preferably a minor proportion of the diluent mixture which is preferably cyclohexane and benzene. It is preferable that the process includes the following features: (a) Al : TiCl4 molar ratio exceeds 3:1; (b) ethylene contains, per c.c. TiCl4, 20-200 c.c. (at N.T.P.) oxygen (in examples, 50 c.c. per g. of TiCl4); (c) polymerization is effected at 110-150 DEG C. and at most 50 atmospheres pressure. In examples, the continuous polymerization of ethylene and the intermittent introduction of ethylene are illustrated and polymer is purified by solution in hot cyclohexane and precipitated by cooling after filtration.
