Abstract: 1,188,973. Air cushion vehicles. SAAB A.B. 3 April, 1967 [4 April, 1966], No. 15159/67. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle 1 has the cushion enclosed by inflatable skirts each comprising a chamber 6 inflated from duct 4 and having attached thereto a further chamber 7 inflated by air from chamber 6 passing through apertures 9. Air is discharged from chamber 7 through apertures 12 to reduce surface drag when in contact with water and also through an aperture 11 to form an air curtain which maintains and contains the air cushion, all of the apertures being constructed with an angled lip 13 as shown in Fig. 5 whereby propulsion is imparted to the vehicle. In other embodiments the chamber 7 is constructed, fore-andaft, in stepped formation so that a series of vertical, rearwardly facing apertured faces are formed, air discharged from the apertures providing air lubrication, a gas curtain and a propulsive effect. The chamber 7 may be formed by contiguous sealed bags or pockets and in further embodiments a plurality, greater than two, of chambers may be arranged so that an annular stabilizing cushion may be formed around the main cushion. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 944,503.
