    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain more speedy heat set operation for fabric by shortening the residence time of the fabric in the heat set unit correspondingly with the energy efficiency improved. SOLUTION: A woven or spiral-link fabric 1 for a paper-making machine is passed through the oven 11 in which the fabric is irradiated with microwave radiation from the microwave generator 13 to at least one surface. The microwave generator 13 is operated by the magnetron tube 14, and the magnetron tube 14 operates in the frequency range from 100 MHz-300 MHz with impedance discrepancy and frequency deviation between the magnetron tube 14 and the irradiation unit that is controlled so that thermally uncontrolled state may be avoided. The fabric is a microwave absorption fiber or yarn and may be a fiber or yarn containing a microwave-absorbing agent, for example, titania.

    Abstract: An excimer or ablation laser is used to cut selected, e.g. warp yarns in a fabric, particularly in joining the ends of a papermaking fabric to make the fabric endless. Optical imaging and electronic guidance of the laser projection is used, and the laser beam may be directed down a probe tube (20), which extends into the fabric and is shaped to push aside yarns to enable the laser to be directed to a target yarn. The laser may also be used for welding yarns in a second stage of the fabric joining process.
