Abstract:
@ The disclosure relates to a disc drive, in which the head/ track included angle is minimised while providing the maximum arm stiffness with minimum inertia by providing a two-arm actuator (20,21; 32) rotating about the common junction point (34) of the two arms. The two arms are mounted at an acute angle. The distal end (38) of the first arm (32) is stepped by a stepper motor (30) connected to the end of the arm. The distal end of the second arm (20, 21) carries the slider (42) and transducer (44). The gap of the transducer and main axis (56) of the slider are directly aligned with the main axis of the arm (21) so that the length of the arm between the pivot point and the point on the track being accessed is minimised.
Abstract:
In a disc drive, a positioning apparatus including a carriage (17), guides (29, 30) for directing the linear travel of the carriage, and drive means (12, 13, 14) driven by a stepper motor for moving the carriage from one position to another. The carriage is supported in guide means for rolling movement by three hardened and ground balls (23, 24, 25) confined in grooves (30, 31) cut in the sides of the carriage and the guide rails. The balls are separated and confined in the longitudinal direction by a retainer which moves parallel and proportionately to the carriage. The retainer (50) is moved by a rack and pinion device, the pinion (60) being movable with the retainer (50) and confined between two racks, one rack (62) being fixed to one of the guide walls or rails (29), the other rack being movable with the carriage itself.
