    Abstract: Particles of polyolefin are impregnated with styrene which is polymd. to prep. particles contg. the polyolefin, polystyrene, and olefin-styrene graft copolymer. The particles are impregnated with a blowing agent and foamed in a mold and the foam is coated wich a styrene-unsatd.-polyestergass fiber mixt. Which is hardened to prep. composites with good adhesion between the foam and the surface coating. The coated foams have good mech. strength, esp. tensile strength, and are useful as building materials, heat insulation, etc.

    Abstract: of the Disclsoure The present invention relates to a foamed composite material whlch can be used as a light weight constructional material or a thermal insulating material having a high mechanical strength, particularly, high tensile strength. The foamed composite material is made by lining a surface of specific plastic foam with a lining material comprising an unsaturated polyester and vinyl monomer. The specific plastic foam is obtained by expanding thermoplastic resin particles consisting of polyolefin, vinyl aromatic polymer and a graft polymer formed by graftpolymerization of the vinyl aromatic monomer onto the polyolefin. The foam may be produced by polymerizing a vinyl aromatic monomer impregnated into particles of the polyolefin to graft the monomer onto the backbone of polyolefln. The vinyl monomer contained in the lining material penetrates into the plastic foam and hardens to bind the lining layer strongly to the plastic foam. The coated plastic foam of the present invention is useful as a material for vessels, floats, tanks, buildings and the like.

    Abstract: In aq. suspensions of polyethylene particles, 30-100wt.% (w.r.t. the particles) styrene was catalytically polymsd. to give expandable polyethylene particles. Thus, in an example, 1,000g. polyethylene particles were stirred at 320 rpm with a mixt. of H2O 2,000, Mg pyrophosphate 9, Na dodecylbenzenesuphonate 0.4g., mixed dropwise at 85 degrees C with 10g. Bz2O2 and 1 g. tert.-butyl-perbenzoate dissolved in 1,000g styrene, and polynsd. for 7 hrs. at 85 degrees to give expandable polyethylene particles contg. polystyrene.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject composition which is effective in mitigating the problem of wastes by mixing a biodegradable synthetic resin with a specific resin to enable the biodegradable resin to degrade in the natural environment at an accelerated rate while enlarging its surface area. CONSTITUTION:A biodegradable synthetic resin (e.g. a polyhydroxybutyrate resin) is mixed with a highly water-absorbing resin (e.g. a crosslinked poly(sodium acrylate)), the amount of the latter being preferably 30wt.% or smaller.
