    Abstract: A drill bit (30, fig 3) includes a body (32, fig 3) having a lower end face for engaging a rock formation, the end face has a number of raised ribs 34 extending from the face of the bit body and separated by a number of channels. At least one of the ribs has a cutting portion, towards its base, that includes a first diamond impregnated matrix material 80, wherein the remaining portion of the rib includes a second diamond impregnated matrix material 43. The second diamond impregnated material is harder than the first diamond impregnated material. The first diamond matrix material may extend from the base along the sidewall a selected height H. A portion 48 of the gage surface region of the rib may include a third diamond impregnated matrix material 40, which is harder than the first material.

    Abstract: A method is provided to manufacture a drill bit (30, fig 3) having ribs extending from the body of the bit. The method includes loading a quantity of abrasive particles and a first matrix material 40 in a mold cavity corresponding to a gage portion 48 of at least one of the ribs. A further quantity of abrasive particles and a second matrix material 34 are then loaded into the other portions of the mold cavity. The mold contents are heated to form an impregnated drill bit. The mold may be infiltrated with a binder.

A further quantity of abrasive particles and a second matrix material 34 are then loaded into the other portions of the mold cavity. The mold contents are heated to form an impregnated drill bit. The vertical portion may correspond to the gage region 48 of the bit. The mold may be infiltrated with a binder.
