Abstract: An antistatic additive for polyamide fibres is disclosed, which is a polyoxyethylene having an average molecular weight of 20,000 and a very narrow range of molecular weight, the molecular dispersion index ranging from 1.02 to 1.2. The antistatic mode of action of the additive according to the invention is not completely elucidated, but outstanding and persistent antistatic properties have been experimentally ascertained. The maximum amount to be used is 0.5% by weight with respect to the polymer; higher amounts are in no wise detrimental, but afford no advantage.

Abstract: 1,019,099. Melt-spinning polyamides. SNIA VISCOSA SOC. NATURALE INDUSTRIA APPLICAZIONI VISCOSA S.p.A. March 10, 1964 [March 15, 1963], No. 10026/64. Heading B5B. In melt-spinning polyamides, the polymer chips, after having been dried, by heating in vacuo, are artificially cooled, or allowed to cool spontaneously, in an atmosphere of inert gas to a temperature not exceeding 50‹ C., and preferably between 25‹ and 30‹ C., before being transferred to the feed hopper of the melt-spinning apparatus, preferably while still surrounded by an atmosphere of the inert gas. The chips may be artificially cooled or allowed to cool spontaneously in the apparatus in which they have been dried in vacuo, a dry inert gas such as dry nitrogen having been introduced into the drying chamber until the interior of the latter is at atmospheric pressure and cold water being circulated through the jacket of the drying chamber (which may be rotated to tumble the chips) until they have been cooled to the desired temperature. Alternatively the chips may be cooled, while they are being mechanically conveyed from the drier to the melt-spinning apparatus, by contacting them with a stream of a cooled dry inert gas such as dry nitrogen. In either case the initial humidity of the inert gas may be so controlled so that it does not exceed a predetermined level, such as 70 milligrams of moisture per cubic metre of gas. In a third method the hot dry chips are discharged from the drying chamber on to a hollow horizontal metallic plate through the interior of which flows a stream of cold water. The plate is enclosed in a chamber through which flows a stream of dry nitrogen and the polymer chips are caused to travel along the entire length of the plate by vibrating the plate. The cooled chips are discharged into a duct through which they are pneumatically conveyed to the melting apparatus by a current of dry nitrogen.

Abstract: 1,031,619. Polycaproamide filaments. SNIA VISCOSA SOC. NAZIONALE INDUSTRIA APPLICAZIONI VISCOSA S.p.A. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 23, 1963]. No. 30714/64. Heading B5B. A polycaproamide polymer having an intrinsic viscosity not less than 1À20, as determined in solution in m-cresol, is spun at a speed of at least 350 m./min., and the extruded filaments, which have a birefringence of at least 0À015, and preferably of from 0À015 to 0À035, are drawn in two or more steps, the draw ratio of the first stretching step for filaments having a birefringence of 0À015 being from 3À5 to 4, and that for filaments having a birefringence of 0À035 and above being from 2À5 to 3À5, the draw ratio of the first stretching step for filaments having a birefringence of 0À015 to 0À035 being obtained by interpolation from the accompanying diagram (Fig. 1). The starting yarn may be obtained by spinning a polymer having an intrinsic viscosity of 1À20 to 1À50 at a speed of 400 m./min. to 800 m./min., Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), illustrate stretching apparatus. In Fig. 2, the first stage stretching is effected between rolls 11 and 19, suitably heated to 150‹ to 200‹ C. and especially to 170-185‹ C., and second stage stretching between rolls 19 and 21, roll 19 being heated. In Fig. 3, roll 19 is not heated but the threadline is heated by passage through heater 20, suitably heated to the same temperature as roll 19 in Fig. 2. Snubbing pins may be inserted between rolls 11 and 19, or rolls 19 and 21, if desired, and said pins may be held at room temperature or heated to 40-75‹ C. and preferably to above 60‹ C. Peripheral speeds of rolls 19 are between 80 and 400 m./min. and preferably 150 to 300 m /min for the apparatus of Fig. 2 and between 90 and 175 m./min. for the apparatus of Fig. 3. Filaments so made have enhanced tenacity and limited elongation and are especially suitable as tyre cord.
