Abstract: An improved electrode having an electroconductive metal support or core at least superficially made of titanium or a titanium alloy and a catalytic coating on the titanium metal surface including (a) at least one substance from the group consisting of the platinum group metals and their oxides and (b) an oxide of tellurium. This novel electrode is particularly adapted for use in the electrolysis of aqueous solution of alkali metal halides.

Abstract: L'invention concerne de nouveaux diaphragmes perméables pour cellules d'électrolyse de solutions aqueuses d'halogénures de métaux alcalins comprenant des fibres inorganiques et un polymère, caractérisés en ce que le polymère est choisi parmi les polyélectrolytes qui sont solubles dans l'eau et insolubles dans les solutions aqueuses d'halogénures de métaux alcalins. Les diaphragmes suivant l'invention peuvent être utilisés dans n'importe quel type de cellules à diaphragme où il y a percolation du diaphragme par la solution d'électrolyte telles que les cellules verticales présentant une alternance d'anodes et de cathodes séparées par des diaphragmes et les cellules horizontales. Ils conviennent particulièrement bien pour l'électrolyse de solutions aqueuses de chlorure de sodium et de chlorure de potassium. Les diaphragmes suivant l'invention ont en service une stabilité de l'épaisseur considérablement améliorée.

Abstract: 1358926 Electrocatalysts; coated electrodes SOLVAY ET CIE 29 July 1971 [29 July 1970] 35747/71 Headings B1E and B2E [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] Electrodes comprise a coating of catalytic material on a support made at least superficially of titanium or a titanium alloy, the catalytic material comprising one or more elements of the platinum group in the metallic and/or oxidised state and tellurium in the oxidised state. The tellurium may be partially replaced by molybdenum or tungsten and the catalytic material may also comprise chromium lead, bismuth, antimony, tin, cadmium, titanium, tantalum and/or niobium in the oxidised state. In the examples the compounds of the catalytic elements are applied in solution in an organic solvent to form a coating and the coated structure is heat-treated. The electrodes are tested in the electrolysis of brine with a flowing mercury cathode to produce chlorine. They can also be used in cathodic protection, water purification, other electrolytic processes and as fuel cell electrodes.
