Abstract: A reproducing device for reproducing a tape-shaped recording medium, such as a magnetic tape, has recorded on it an address information along with data on a plurality of inclined tracks. The address information is composed of a track address and a block address. The reproducing device, reading out and reproducing data from the tape-shaped recording medium, includes a reproducing unit, an address extracting unit, a memory, a driving unit and a controller. The reproducing unit reads out data from the tape-shaped reproducing medium for data reproduction. The reproducing unit has a rotary head configured for scanning plural tracks of the tape-shaped recording medium for reading out data from the recording medium. The address extracting unit extracts the address information from data read out by the reproducing unit by one scanning of the tape-shaped recording medium by the rotary head. The memory stores data read out from the reproducing unit. The data read out from the reproducing unit is written in the memory based upon the address information extracted by the address extraction unit. The driving unit runs the tape-shaped recording medium. The controller generates read-out addresses for reading out the data stored in the memory. The controller controls the driving unit based upon the address information which is extracted by the address extraction unit and which is associated with pre-set locations on the track of the tape-shaped recording medium.

Abstract: An external position detector (6) is mounted on a head arm (1) that also carries a transducer (2) for tracking a magnetic disk (5). When the head arm (1) is moved at constant speed, the position detector (6) produces an output signal that is periodic but has a measurable pitch error or pitch uneveness. The periodic output signal is measured to determine the pitch error, and an amount of compensation required to compensate for the measured pitch error is calculated. A value of the periodic output signal corresponding to the amount of compensation and therefore corresponding to an absence of pitch error is calculated, and a servo signal is recorded on the magnetic disk (5) at a location corresponding to the calculated value of the periodic output signal. The pitch error is thereby fully compensated, and the servo signal is recorded with precision.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately judge the life of a magnetic tape, and to improve the reliability of data storage by using information for each kind of tape and information of the number of usage that are read from a cassette for judging the deterioration of the magnetic tape, and by instructing warning output when it is judged that the tape has deteriorated. SOLUTION: History information and accumulation history information are retained in an MIC:4. A tape streamer drive 10 confirms specification information being stored into an EEP-ROM:18, and the thickness of a tape corresponding to specifications is judged. Corresponding to the thickness of the tape, load thresh N of the deterioration judgment is set. The value of the load count of the accumulative partition information of the MIC:4 is read. The number of loading times of a tape cassette after initial formatting is confirmed. It is judged whether the value of the load count exceeds the load thresh N or not. Information on the deterioration judgment result is sent to a host computer 40, and warning is issued to a user.

SOLUTION: When a tape cassette loading a memory is inserted, a tape recording/reproducing apparatus accesses information recorded to the loaded memory, extracts cassette identification information composed of mechanical electric characteristics, a format system of a tape and the like from the information, and records to a fixed area of the tape itself in a fixed mode. If the apparatus cannot access the memory information, the apparatus searches for a system area of the tape in a least significant mode of an AIT format. When detecting the system area, the apparatus tries to read starting from a most significant mode of the AIT format sequentially to a less significant mode, and sets an optimum process mode, based on the read cassette identification information.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform operation setting according to a mode automatically by discriminating modes being set to a tape from either or both of control information being read from a memory being provided at a tape cassette and control information being read from the magnetic tape. SOLUTION: A tape streamer drive for recording on a magnetic tape 3 by helical scanning is provided with a multi-partition mode for using the magnetic tape in three partitions or more. A tape cassette mounts an MIC:4 that is a non-volatile memory and stores control information including a history for each partition. When the tape cassette is loaded, a system controller 15 accesses the MIC:4. Then, when the control information is read appropriately, the tape cassette is recognized as a cassette in multi-partition mode and the mode information of a work memory 24 is updated to a corresponding mode. When the MIC:4 cannot be recognized, the magnetic tape 3 is run and the control information is read.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time for performing a data addition processing and to enhance sureness of the processing, by controlling a recording data processing means, a recording means and a tracking control means, and recording identification information of the final group in an end-of-data area. SOLUTION: Data is exchanged between an interface controller 10 and a host computer 1. The inputted data is signal-processed and converted into a prescribed format by a recording data processing system 20. A signal supplied from the recording data processing system 20 is recorded on a magnetic tape, and also the magnetic tape is reproduced by a recording and reproducing part 30. A reproducing output from the recording and reproducing part 30 is signal- processed by a reproducing data processing system 40 so as to reproduce the data recorded on the magnetic tape. A tape traveling system of the recording and reproducing part 30 is controlled by a tracking control system 50. Each system is controlled by a system controller 60 so that the indentification information of the final group is recorded in the end-of-data area, and also the identification information of the final group is read out accordingly.
