Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform high-speed access after insertion of a cartridge and to easily protect the data of a tape position in the ejection of a cartridge. SOLUTION: A tape is divided equally between the logical head and the end, and an ejection position candidate ID is set. When a candidate ID is found in a record of user data UD1, retry processing is performed even when no error exists in the nest data UD2. The same data UD2 is recorded repeatedly by the number of times a region having possibility of being damaged is included in the ejection/insertion of a cartridge, and an ejection region is created. The ID of the position is stored in a memory making the approximate center of the ejection region as the ejection/insertion position. The next user data UD3 is recorded succeeding to the ejection region. In the ejection of a cartridge, a tape is moved to the ejection/insertion position ID. Since the ejection region is created by retry processing, the ejection region is easily created and since the same user data are repeatedly recorded in the ejection region, data is protected from damage.
