Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to negate the influence of the next line without changing a liquid crystal material by using such a driving waveform that prevents data pulses from being impressed for at least one line in the data pulses to be impressed. SOLUTION: Two glass substrates are assembled by using a spacer and a UV-curing type adhesive so that the vapor deposition directions of diagonally vapor deposited SiO films are paralleled with each other to assemble an empty liquid crystal cell. Ferroelectric liquid crystals uniformly dispersed with, for example, titanium oxide particulates are injected into the cell gap to obtain a liquid crystal display element. At the time of driving the liquid crystal element, such a driving waveform that prevents the data pulses from being impressed for at least one line in the data pulses to be impressed by the data electrodes is used. In such a case, the time to the next line is made longer by preventing the impression of the data pulses for at least one line on the present line. As a result, the deviation between the transmittance when the circumference is black and the transmittance when the circumference is white decreases.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To secure the high resolution by placing a condenser device which condenses the incident light in a prescribed size at a position of the light incident side of a wobbling element corresponding to the pixel of an optical element such as a display element or an image pickup element, etc. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal display element LCD 2 and a wobbling element 7 including a wobbling liquid crystal element 3 with a micro lens serving as a phase modulation element and a double refraction medium 4 consisting of a transparent substrate like a crystal plate, etc., are successively arranged in the same optical path and along the light traveling direction. An optical lens consisting of a pair of convex lenses 120 and 121 is added between the LCD 2 and the element 7. The pitch P1 of a pixel 115 of the LCD 2 is set larger than the pitch P2 of a pixel 113 of the element 3. Then the focal distances of both lenses are prescribed so that the light 6 emitted from the specific pixel 115 of the LCD 2 can surely be made incident on the pixel 113.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a wide visual field angle and high-speed responsiveness, to make it possible to display gradation and to improve an opening rate by combining a monostable ferroelectric liquid crystal element (monostable FLC element) and active matrix elements such as TFTs for driving this FLC element. CONSTITUTION: An N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone soln. is applied on the TFT 6 side of a glass substrate 1a and is baked to form a polyimide oriented film 5a. This film is subjected to an orientation treatment by rubbing. A common electrode 4 side is formed with a black matrix 2 of chromium, color filters 3 and transparent electrodes (ITO) 4 on a glass substrate 1b and is formed with a polyimide film 5b on the surface of the ITO. This film is subjected to the orientation treatment by rubbing. The TFT side panel and the color filter side panel are so combined that the orientation treatment directions are counter-paralleled on the opposite surfaces. The gap between the substrates is controlled by using spacers 7 and the circumference of the cell is adhered with a sealant by assuring the injection hole for liquid crystals. The injection hole is then sealed with a UV curing adhesive, by which the monostable FLC element is obtd.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable high-speed wobbling (picture element shifting) and to efficiently attain higher resolution by combining a phase modulation optical element having spacings spacings filled with specific liquid crystals and an optically transparent double refractive medium. CONSTITUTION:This optical device consists of a combination of the phase modulation optical element in which with plural pieces of optically transparent base bodies provided with optically electrodes and oriented films in this order are arranged to face each other apart the prescribed spacings on the electrode and oriented film sides, and in which at least one kind of the liquid crystals selected from among a ferroelectric liquid crystal 3, antiferroelectric liquid crystal and smectic liquid crystal exhibiting an electric gradient effect are injected in the spacings, and the optically transparent double refractive medium 4. By this constitution, the phase of light is changed and the plane of polarization is shifted by the phase modulation optical element and further, incident light is selectively refracted by the double refractive medium 4 and, therefore, the discrete pixels are effectively wobbled. The resolution is thus improved and the image quality is improved as well.

This liquid crystal material is the ferroelectric liquid crystal(FLC) compsn. exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase within a temp. range of -41 to 74 deg.C and is particularly driven by the presence of an electric field within a temp. range of -10 to 72 deg.C. This material is adequate for a wobbling operation.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To accurately form a gap to a specified thickness between glass substrates by interposing spacer and spherical adhesive between two glass substrates and spreading the spacer and spherical adhesive in order of a smaller particle size. There is no any limit except the above, for example, any kind of spacer or any spreading method is used. Namely, by spreading the material successively in order of smaller particle size on the glass substrate, aggregation of the spacers during spreading can be prevented and the gap can be uniformly formed.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving liquid crystal element which suppresses burning, etc., by smoothly switching the liquid crystal element. SOLUTION: This method for driving the liquid crystal element consists in impressing a selection pulse after impressing a reset pulse including a first reset pulse and a second reset pulse of the polarity reverse from the polarity of this first reset pulse at the time of driving the liquid crystal element disposed with liquid crystals between a first substrate having data electrodes arrayed in one direction and a second substrate having selection electrodes arrayed in the direction intersecting with these data electrodes. In this method, the additive pulse A2 of the same polarity as the polarity of the first reset pulse A1 is impressed between the second reset pulse B and the second selection pulse (a) to make the sum of the electric field intensity area A2 of the additive pulse A2 and the electric field intensity area A1 of the first reset pulse A1 substantially is equalized to the electric field intensity area B of the second reset pulse B. In addition, the voltage of the additive pulse A2 is made the same in the polarity as the polarity of the threshold voltage at the time of switching of the liquid crystals and below this threshold voltage.
