A reproduction program is installed in a PC, and then a ripping key of a CD is provided from, e.g. an FD. By using the ripping key, the music contents in the CD can be copied to a PD, but music contents cannot be downloaded from an EMD server and copied to a PD. If the music contents distributed from an EMD server is stored in a PD, a key for EMD different from the ripping key is acquired through a network and the reproduction program is executed. Thus, the security of the contents data distributed through a network is enhanced.

A CPU (11) of a personal computer (1) instructs a CPU (32) of an adapter (26) comprising a semiconductor IC to calculate the hash value of a tune database for managing the contents recorded on an HDD (21) and to store the hash value in a nonvolatile memory (34). When the contents recorded on the HDD (21) are reproduced, the CPU (11) calculates the hash value of the tune database, compares it with the hash value stored in the nonvolatile memory (34), and control the reproduction of the contents from the HDD (21) according to the results of the comparison.

A pixel area with image content that can be processed without greatly altering the entire image content, for instance, may be designated as the replacement area. Replacement image data are generated by executing processing for replacing all of or part of the pixel data in the replacement area with insertion image data. The insertion image data are image data containing text, graphics or the like, such as an advertisement, a message or a translation. Consequently, various types of information can be provided in the replacement image data, a message from the user can be incorporated in the replacement image data, or better user convenience can be assured through the replacement image data.

A photographic apparatus infers a user's photographic intent and accordingly switches between a manual shoot mode and an automatic shoot mode. In the manual shoot mode, processing to save photographic image data is timed in accordance with the user operating a user-operable shutter element, while in the automatic shoot mode, such processing is conducted independently of shutter element operations. A photographic unit photographs a scene, acquires photographic image data of a subject, and then executes processing for saving the photographic image data. An intention judgment information detector detects intention judgment information used to judge the photographic intent of the user. A controller makes an intention judgment using the intention judgment information from the intention judgment information detector, and according to the intention judgment result, causes the photographic unit to selectively execute the operations for one of the modes.

APC memorizes backup of distributed music contents on a hard disc, at the same time as it transmits the using log information of the music contents stored in the hard disc to an EMD server. If the music contents in the hard disc are destroyed, the PC acquires the using log information from the EMD server to reproduce the backup data memorized in the hard disc depending on the using log information.
