A method for monitoring time so that the use of protected content can be controlled includes receiving a trusted time value from a trusted authority external to a client device. When the client is no longer in communication with the trusted authority, the previously-received trusted time value is updated by use of the client's operating system counter so that a calculated trusted time value is derived for content license evaluation purposes.

An information providing device comprises a portable communication terminal (1) provided with a telephone communication means (26) which receives multimedia information from a server (7) or a data base (8) connected to a radio communication network (2) by making access to the server (7) or data base (8) and a man-machine interface means (22) to which multimedia information is supplied; and the server (7) provided with a data base (7DB) for storing multimedia information, external communication processing means which receives information from a server (10) connected to an external information communication network (4) by making access to the server (10), data processing means for processing or converting the information received by the external communication processing means, and a transferring means which transfers information from the external communication processing means or the data processing means to the terminal (1) through a portable telephone system network (2). Therefore, the portable communication terminal can be reduced in size, can be improved in portability and operability, can acquire multimedia information from a server connected to a radio telephone communication network or external information communication network, and can output the information to a man-machine interface means. In addition, the portable communication terminal can acquire multimedia information from communication terminal connected to the external information communication network by making access to the communication terminal even when no terminal software, viewer, etc., are specially installed to the portable communication terminal. Further the portable communication terminal can output the information to the interface means after processing or converting the information in accordance with the outputting ability of the interface means.

[Solving Means] A web server (21) of an IPTV server sets an acquisition request time of a main license within a time period from a broadcast start time to a predetermined set time at random in accordance with an acquisition request of a license for reproducing an encrypted content, the acquisition request being from an IPTV client terminal (10), and transmits, to the IPTV client terminal (10), information on the acquisition request time of the main license and a temporary license including a temporary content key that corresponds to a reproduction of the broadcast content from the broadcast start time to the predetermined set time. A client (1) pays 10 yen to acquire use right for reproduction. The client (1) further pays 30 yen to acquire the use right for reproduction and check out. That is, the use right for only reproduction is upgraded to the use right containing reproduction and check out. The present invention can be applied to a server providing a content via a network.
