    Abstract: A fine particle dispersion composition comprises metal-oxide fine particles; an organic resin material adapted to cure by absorbing energy; one of polyoxyethylene alkyl ether phosphoric acid-based surfactant and a polyoxyethylene alkyl ether carboxylic acid-based surfactant (each having molecular weight of >= 500); and an organic solvent. The composition becomes an optical component when cured. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) an optical film laminate having several stacked optical films that differ in refractive index from one another. The optical film is obtained by curing the fine particle dispersion; (2) a polarization splitting device having a transparent base member having inclined plane surfaces formed in it by grooving, the inclined plane surfaces differing in inclination direction from each other. The inclined plane surfaces has a polarization splitting multilayer film formed on it. The transparent base member and/or the polarization splitting multilayer film is obtained by curing the fine particle dispersion composition; and (3) preparation of optical component involving performing dispersion treatment on metal-oxide fine particles, an organic resin material adapted to cure by absorbing energy; one of polyoxyethylene alkyl ether phosphoric acid-based surfactant and a polyoxyethylene alkyl ether carboxylic acid-based surfactant (each having molecular weight of >=500) in organic solvent together with high hardness metallic balls or ceramic balls; subsequently applying dispersion solution and evaporating the organic solvent.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reconcile durability and electromagnetic transducing characteristic by using a binder consisting essentially of nitrocellulose, a vinyl chloride-based copolymer and polyurethane for a magnetic layer and specifying the gel fraction. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is constituted so as to form the magnetic layer 2 and a back coat layer 3 on both surfaces of a non-magnetic supporting body. The magnetic layer 2 contains a magnetic powder and the binder. The binder consists essentially of nitrocellulose, a vinyl chloride-based copolymer and polyurethane and has 80-95% gel fraction, where, the vinyl chloride-based copolymer preferably occupies >=70wt.% in the binder from the view point of obtaining the prescribed gel fraction, improving the dispersibility to the magnetic powder and imparting a sufficient coating film strength to the magnetic layer or the like.

SOLUTION: The upper layer (magnetic layer) 20 of the multi-layer coating type magnetic disk 3 contains nomnagnetic powder having 8 or higher Mohs' hardness and 0.2-0.6 μm average primary particle size. The centerline surface average roughness Ra of the surface of the layer 20 is 4 nm or smaller. Projections based on the nonmagnetic powder are formed on the surface of the layer 20 so that the projections having 10-50 nm height exist by 50-400 pieces/400 μm2 and those having higher than 50 nm height exist by 1-20 pieces/400 μm2.
