    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve surface strength without degrading the electromagnetic conversion characteristics. SOLUTION: This medium has a nonmagnetic base 1, a magnetic layer 3 which is formed by applying magnetic paint obtained by kneading at least magnetic powder and a binding agent, a hard carbon protection film 4 formed on the magnetic layer 3, and a lubricant layer 5 formed of a lubricant on the hard carbon protection film 4. The magnetic recording medium has a superior surface strength by having the DLC protection film and lubricant layer formed, and its coefficient of friction is reduced. The medium, therefore, has superior wear resistance and electromagnetic conversion characteristics. Thus, the magnetic recording medium is suitable for high-density recording.

The nonmagnetic base 2 is in the difference Δn1 in the refractive index between the first main surface 2a and the second main surface 2b. Thermosetting polyisocyanate may be preferably incorporated into the magnetic layers 3, 4.
