Congested rewriting in the same area is to be evaded to suppress the tendency towards occurrence of defective areas. When a stream 1 has been recorded, the last written address, representing the last written position, is stored. When recording a stream 2 next, recording is started directly following the position indicated by the last written address for the stream 1. The last written address, corresponding to the last address of the recording position, is stored. If the stream 2 is erased for recording a stream 3, recording is started not at a position directly following the last written address of the stream 1, but from a position directly following the last written address of the stream 2. When the stream 3 has reached the end of a recording area, the next following data is recorded as from a position directly following the stream 1.

An apparatus for recording a sequence of video data signals on a record carrier (3) has been proposed. The apparatus comprises input (1) means for receiving video data signals, generating means (100) for generating characteristic point information signals, processing means for processing the characteristic point information signals for a plurality of characteristic points into a sequence of characteristic points information signals (CPI) and writing means (108) for writing the sequence of video data signals and the sequence of characteristic points information signals on the record carrier (3). The characteristic point information signals identify a characteristic point in the sequence of video data signals. Various measures are proposed in relation to the CPI aiming at providing compact way of storing information related to a size of I-pictures.

In a recording medium storing MPEG stream, flag information (encode_condition) indicating that the stream is recorded in a format enabling easily the first stream (MPEG transport stream) to be converted into the second stream (MPEG program stream) is provided. Such as a flag information is included in Tip packet which is a control packet, in the medium. Thus it can easily determine whether the data is recorded in this format without analysis of data stored in the recording medium.
Abstract:
A method for recording video information for controlling video information copy limit information when copying data recorded on a recording medium to another recording medium. By detecting copy limit information (CCI) or a watermark (WM) of an AV stream to be input, it is checked whether the content of the copy limit information or the watermark has been changed. Change point information of the copy limit information or the watermark and the content of the copy limit information or the watermark are fetched. According to the change point information fetched, control information is generated for controlling the copy limit information. When the input signal has ended, a code for preventing altering is calculated, it is confirmed that the copy limit information or the watermark has not been altered, and the control information generated is recorded together with the video information to the recording medium of copy destination.

The title of a content can be quickly read out and displayed. The allocation class of a file to be recorded on an optical disc is defined as attribute information concerning the assignment of the file. Files the classes of which are defined as a gathered file are all recorded in a gathered file area provided in a predetermined place on the optical disc. Files 1 to 3 containing the title of a content are recorded in the gathered file area. The record positions A1, A2 of an FSD (file system descriptor) are fixed, and the record positions A3, A4 in the gathered file are varied as necessary.

The present invention can perform appropriate management of security information on an AV signal. A thumb nail encoder (19) extracts a thumb nail image from video information input from a terminal (12) and encodes it. When the content management information on video information as the origin of the thumb nail image is “copy once”, a controller (21) controls an encryption unit (22) to encrypt the thumb nail image information and record it on a recording medium (26). Here, information indicating that the encrypted thumb nail image is recorded is recorded in a separate file from the thumb nail image on the recording medium (26). The present invention can be applied to a recording apparatus or a reproduction apparatus capable of properly managing security information on an AV signal.

A disk apapratus includes an optical pickup (5) for making access to an optical disk (4) having read-only regions and writable regions arranged alternatively at predetermined radial intervals and storing boundary write track position information representing adjacent read-only region and writable region; a thread motor (11) for moving the optical pickup (5) in the disk radial direction; an RF amplifier (7), in response to the output from the optical pickup (5), for generating a traverse signal whose level changes each time the optical pickup (5) traverses the write track at first setting corresponing to the read-only region or second setting corresponding to writable region selected on the basis of a switch signal when the optical pickup (5) is moving; a servo circuit (9) having counting means for counting the number of write tracks traversed on the basis of the traverse signal; and a system controller (8) for outputting the switch signal to the RF amplifier (7) on the basis of the number of write tracks output from the present track position to the boundary write position and on the basis of the number of write tracks counted by the servo circuit (9) when the boundary write track position exists between the present write track position which is accessed at present by the optical pickup (5) and is detected by the present position detection means and the target write track position.

A recording or reproduction apparatus is provided which utilizes copyright information in operations to record content data onto a recording medium or reproduce content data from the recording medium. Copyright information for the contents includes information identifying an input source of the content data. The information identifying an input source is stored in the recording medium along with the content data. When the contents are reproduced from the recording medium, the input source information is acquired and used as a basis for determining whether the contents can be reproduced and output. Thus, it is possible to impose an output restriction on an operation to reproduce the contents in accordance with the input source.

A video signal processing apparatus, a video signal reproduction apparatus, and a video signal recording apparatus capable of preventing unauthorized copying of thumb nail images. A thumb nail encoder (19) creates a thumb nail image of a video signal input from a terminal (12). A macro vision detector (13), a CGMS detection/updating unit (14), and a WM (watermark) detection/updating unit (15) detect an analog copy protection signal (APS) of the video signal input from the terminal (12), a CGMS signal as copy generation management information, and a watermark, respectively and output them to a controller (21). According to these copy limit information, the controller (21) creates thumb nail image copy limit information. In an information recording medium (26), a thumb nail image and its copy limit information are recorded. The present invention can be applied to a recording apparatus for recording data on an information recording medium and a reproduction apparatus for reproducing data from the information recording medium.
