    Abstract: In an apparatus for converting received video signals of a first format, which has a first number of horizontal lines in a field or frame and a picture display of a first aspect ratio, to video signals of a second format, which has a second number of horizontal lines in a field or frame and a picture display of a second aspect ratio: an analog-to-digital converter (2) converts the received video signals of the first format to digital video signals, a memory (6) has addresses at which there are written at least a field of the digital video signals of the first format, whereupon, a reading circuit (7) reads from the memory (6) addresses less samples of the digital video signals than were written in the memory (6) and the digital video signals thus read from the memory (6) are converted back to analog form, and a controller (9 ) is provided for variably determining a start address of the addresses in the memory (6) from which video signal data are read. In the case where the first aspect ratio is larger than the second aspect ratio, the selection of the start address determines a portion or portions of the picture display of the first aspect ratio to be omitted at least at one side of the picture display of the second aspect ratio.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an aspect ratio of a display screen to be arbitrarily set as required and correspondence to various video devices with a single cathode- ray tube by forming a fluorescent face so that the aspect ratio is substantially equal in a cathode ray tube. SOLUTION: In a flat cathode-ray tube 16, a face plate 16A is formed lengthwise, and further a fluorescent face 20 is formed so that an aspect ratio is 1:1 viewed from the face plate 16A side. That is, with respect to the fluorescent face 20 viewed from the face plate 16A side, when a screen size specified by a length of a diagonal line is G, in a fluorescent face with an aspect ratio of 3:4, horizontal and vertical lengths are 0.8G and 0.6G, respectively, and on the contrary in this flat cathode-ray tube 16 the horizontal and vertical lengths are 0.8G, respectively. Thereby, in the flat cathode-ray tube 16, an aspect ratio of a display image can be arbitrarily set.

    Abstract: The horizontal deflection apparatus has a separator the cross-section of which takes a saddle-shape form, and horizontal deflecting coils are comprised of three coil groups connected in a series to each other. The first coil group is wound on the outermost circumference on the inside of the main structure of the separator, the second coil group is wound at a predetermined distance from the first coil group, and the third coil group is wound at a predetermined distance from the second coil group.
