The magnetic tape is twisted in the middle of the tape travel system in order to cancel difference in tension between upper and lower edges of the magnetic tape when the magnetic tape is loaded onto the drum.

Abstract: The tape loading mechanism has a device to regulate the vertical position of the inclined guide (12,15) on the tape winding drum (13). This is arranged to correspond to a lower edge of the tape, immediately preceding the loading of the tape onto the drum. The tape is placed under torsion by a mechanism in the middle of the tape handler, so that the difference in tension between the top and the bottom edges of the tape is cancelled when the tape is loaded onto the winding drum. The torsion is applied by the tape guide (16) placed at the delivery side of the drum, and the pinch roller and the capstan.

SOLUTION: A magnet 51 constituting a rotational amount detecting means fixed to a tension regulator arm 40 is composed of a flat block-like member, and pole projections 55a and 55b are formed by a long groove 53 provided in its lower surface. An N pole is magnetized in one pole projection 55a, and an S pole is magnetized in the other pole projection 55b. Thus, by integrally forming the magnet 51 of N/S bipolar magnetization in one magnetic material, the magnet 51 is simply manufactured at low costs to obtain an economical and highly productive tape recording/reproducing device. Preferably, the magnet 51 is fixed to a height adjusting member 41 loaded in the tension regulator arm 40.
